The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
My 5 year old son has had a dry persistant cough since October it flares up then dies down but isn't unwell with it what could it be? Often at night
Suspicious asthma: A chronic cough that is often worse at night frequently is a symptom of a type of reactive airway disease (asthma). If your pediatrician has not been able to help you with this, recommend a pediatric pulmonologist or allergist. The other thing to consider is inhalation of a foreign body, although 5 is a bit old for this to commonly happen. Do you recall a choking episode around time this started? ...Read more

Is it ok to give my 5 year old children's benadryl and childrens mucinex cough? She has bad allergies which makes her cough mostly at night.
I would not advise giving these medications to your child based on the information provided.
I would suggest an over the counter anti histamine such as Claritin instead which is less sedating.
The underlying cause of her nighttime cough should be further evaluated by her PCP. Does she have a history of asthma? Is there smoke exposure? ...Read more

My younger brother, a five years old boy, has a fever with cough but we noticed that their is a little blood inside his phlegm. Is this a risk?
See below: Blood streaking in the phlegm could be due to a blood nose (epistaxis) that drained to the back of the throat, but it may also be due to other reasons, like a tear in the throat from hard coughing or worse. . . A bronchitis or pneumonia. Especially if the child is having any breathing difficulty, get him seen asap. ...Read more
My 4, almost 5 year old has an ear infection & cough. I gave her zyrtec-5ml at 8 last night and bromfed-2.5ml around 345 this morning. Is this ok?
Probably!: The dosing for each medicine is fine, however you don't want to combine both at the same time, in your case there's about 8 hours difference, but the zyrtec stays in the body more than that, she may be sleepy so better don't give any more of either till 8 pm, if needed after that, bromfed would be more helpful, read the labels carefully and don't exceed recommended dosage, wish you both wellness ...Read more

My 5 year old has had a cough for a few days. Now, he hasa lot of pain in his abdomen. It seems like its hard for himto breathe and his temperature is 100.3. What should I do?
His heart rate is slightly high. If he has a cold or a fever his heart rate can increase and that would make it normal.
Keep him well hydrated by drinking lots of fluids, if he has a fever use Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen and that would help with the fever and decrease the heart rate. ...Read more

Allergies?: If only wet cough start by addressing the possibility of allergies causing the excess phlegm. Give benadryl, (diphenhydramine) or any other allergy medicine. If not better in a few days, cough becomes worst or shortness of breath, then seek prompt medical attention. In the later scenarios it might be asthma, sinusitis or bronchitis all of which need medical evaluation. ...Read more

My 5 year old has a cough, yellow snot/congestion, sore throat and woke up with crusty eyes, no fever...I'm guessing that she has a virus???
Not much...........: The american academy of pediatrics has come out not recommending cough medicines, due to a lack of improvement in multiple controlled studies--as well as several deaths. My 5 year old caught a cold 3 weeks ago. Had fever on day 1. He's happy & energetic now, but he's had a lingering cough for 2 weeks. Problem?
The most common: Reason for persistent cough after a viral infection is Reactive Airway Disease (RAD). RAD = mild Asthma, in which a child has spasm of the small airways manifested by coughing, but not audible wheezing or trouble breathing. His pediatrician can diagnose this. Another possibility is " walking pneumonia" from a viral or Mycoplasma infection. Don't give cold/ cough meds under age 6. Take him in. ...Read more
