NIGHT TIME COUGH::
Many causes, e.g. Post nasal drip from sinus congestion, simple cold, asthma, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, etc. Because of weather changes, kids are getting more cold/viral illness with cough.

My 5 year old son has had a dry persistant cough since October it flares up then dies down but isn't unwell with it what could it be? Often at night

Suspicious asthma: A chronic cough that is often worse at night frequently is a symptom of a type of reactive airway disease (asthma). If your pediatrician has not been able to help you with this, recommend a pediatric pulmonologist or allergist. The other thing to consider is inhalation of a foreign body, although 5 is a bit old for this to commonly happen. Do you recall a choking episode around time this started? ...Read more

Is it ok to give my 5 year old children's benadryl and childrens mucinex cough? She has bad allergies which makes her cough mostly at night.

MGT:
I would not advise giving these medications to your child based on the information provided.
I would suggest an over the counter anti histamine such as Claritin instead which is less sedating.
The underlying cause of her nighttime cough should be further evaluated by her PCP. Does she have a history of asthma? Is there smoke exposure?
