5 Year Old Dry Cough At Night
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
Cough suppressant for a 3 yr old? Temps of 103 every night for last 5 nights. Cough seems to be worsening. Help please!
4 yr old has a cough day & night. Night cough for 2 wks. Added day cough 1wk. Dry cough. When worry? No fever. Vomiting 1 day prior to day cough.
Time for a visit: Most viral infections (colds) should improve after a week. Since your child's symptoms have lasted longer than that and are expanding I would consider a medical office visit. Cough at night may be reactive airway disease and might benefit from inhaled albuterol. There is a mild respiratory infection - Mycoplasma - that can cause mild cough for weeks especially at night. ...Read more
Tired not , I'd say: I'm sure you have tried everything. But quality, restorative sleep required 8 hours. He/she needs to burn all left over energy before bed. No sugar or glucose/ carbs at night. Reduce carbs during the day. No red food coloring. No fluids 2 to 3 hours before bed. Alow him/her to stay in the room and play instead of coming out or attending to them, seek medical attention for medication to ..... More. ...Read more
Is it ok to give my 5 year old children's benadryl and childrens mucinex cough? She has bad allergies which makes her cough mostly at night.
MGT: I would not advise giving these medications to your child based on the information provided. I would suggest an over the counter anti histamine such as Claritin instead which is less sedating. The underlying cause of her nighttime cough should be further evaluated by her PCP. Does she have a history of asthma? Is there smoke exposure? ...Read more
5 year old daughter had dry cough nonstop 6 days. Got steroids helped now getting worse, runny nose and coughing fits frequently, gasping.
? Inflammation: Although from the outset, it appears an infectious issue (such as a viral upper respiratory infection), the time frame, age, and improvement to steroids could also indicate and inflammatory process such as asthma or allergies. A trial on allergy/asthma medication that focuses on controlling inflammation of the airways is a reasonable starting point. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My 5 month old recently became very congested and has a tough time sleeping at night. He wakes about every 2-3 hours. Any medicine or advice?
Congested 5 mo old: Three things to start with. Elevate his head by putting him in his infant seat to sleep. Normal saline nose drops for babies and run a cool mist humidifier near him at night and naps. If it has been over 3 days, have him checked by his pediatrician. I hope that this helps. ...Read more
1 yr old with wet cough and chest congestion, worse at night, no fever, vomits at night sometimes. on Aerius & Otirivin. Should I give Zithromax?
Cold preparations: Over the counter cold medicines do not reduce symptoms enough to risk the side effects including changes in heart rate and blood pressure. Try humidifier, lots of liquids (chicken soup!) and ice pops. And see your doctor if he is very uncomfortable. Best of luck and get well soon! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What can I give my 3 year old for horrible dry cough? He has coughing fits that keep him up at night. Most medicines for children say age 6+.
3yr old twins had cold symp.10/18 but congestion/runny nose gone. Now developed very bad wet cough especially at night x 1 1/2wks fever102 please help?
3yr old has wet cough, stuffy nose, no fever, cough is worse at night, chest/lungs sound clear. Cold?Allergies?Pediatrician put her on Bromfed (brompheniramine) for 3days
Use pain relief med : Depending on how long the problem has been there and having just been seen, I would make her comfortable with medicines like Tylenol, (acetaminophen) esp at bedtime. If her cough worsens or if fever returns you should have her re- examined. Appears viral for now. Normal saline nose drops may help cough as well as stuffy nose. If problem is recurrent or seasonal then allergy should be considered. ...Read more
My 5 year old kid wakes up at night (between 3 am and 5 am) with vomits and diarrhea with stomach ache. It happened 4 times in the past month.
My 6 yr old son began coughing 2 days ago. Sounds congested. Waking in his sleep now with wheezing.Had OTC cold/cough+antihistamine. Not helping!
No OTC: I'm not surprised the over-the-counter meds didn't help. Studies have clearly shown they are pretty much a waste of money in kids, and probably just delay appropriate treatment if needed. Many of these things are caused by viruses, but if you are hearing audible wheezing, then your child needs further evaluation to see if prescription medications would be helpful. Don't wait until monday. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
1 year old sin doesn't sleep at night, never has. He fusses all night & wakes up at least 4x tossing and turning. Has never slept 1 full night. Help?
Sleep: Develop a bedtime routine - bath, story or song, then bed at the same time every night in his own bed. His last nap of the day should end no later than 3:30 or 4pm. Babies that age are naturally restless sleepers, it is ok for him to toss and turn but he need to learn to go back to sleep on his own. If he wakes up, check on him but don't pick him up. He will cry, cough, gag, etc. Dont give in! ...Read more
