Not related: Hives and constipation exist independent of one another. Constipation isusually either too much constipating food, not enough fiber, or not enough water. Fiber supplements help, as does cutting down on dairy and drinking more water. Hives are an allergic problem. First treat with benadryl, (diphenhydramine) then find and remove the cause of the hives. If all this fails, see your pediatrician. ...Read more

My 3.5 yo son is potty trained for pee (has been for 6+ months) but absolutely refuses to poop in the potty. He is not constipated. What can we do?
Be Patient!: Trying anything but subtle encouragement will likely cause the opposite effect! At his age I would guess that only 1/2 of all boys are fully trained. Leave the potty available to him, offer privacy, and recognize his cues for a pending bm to suggest a sit on the potty. You might consider a star chart (star on the chart for each movement he does on the potty, but avoid treats as rewards. ...Read more

Relatively common: Stool retention is relatively common. A skilled pediatrician or pedi GI doc can help. Good luck. ...Read more

Calcium and Protein: Many american's have relatively low, if not deficient, calcium levels. This leads to slow leeching of calcium from our bones, making them more brittle in old age. I suspect any doctor's you've spoken with recommend milk for this reason. Milk is also a good source of protein. Remember the fat though, I always recommend skim milk, and at most 2%, for adults. ...Read more
