5 Month Old Is Constipated
When can you start giving a baby water? My son is 5 months old and constipated...I've heard water could help. Is it too soon to give it to him?
Now is OK: If your kid is putting out rabbit pellets then water in small (ounce) quantities may help. If you've started solids, applesauce & rice cereal have a constipating effect while barley seems to soften stools. Full strength apple or prune juice in ounce quantities will often loosen stool naturally. ...Read more
My five month old son is constipated. (He just started eating solid foods.) Any tips or ideas on how to get his bowel movements back to normal?
A little juice.: If your son is having stools that are soft then he is likely not constipated, even if he is only having a bowel movement every couple of days. The introduction of solid foods can change the frequency of bowel movements as the solid foods take longer to process than milk or formula. If his stools are very firm, adding a small amount of juice to his bottles may help. ...Read more
Water: Most constipation is due to dehydration. Give him or her a little extra water or dilute his milk or formula with water. You can also try mineral oil, which is a clear oil, that you can mix with food or drink and this will naturally soften stool. If baby is throwing up, fevers, or not eating and excessively fussy, you need to contact your pediatrician. Try vaselline on rectum too. ...Read more

Glycerin suppository: If a 5 month old has been pushing when pooping, or pooping firm poops, a parent can try giving the child 2-3 ounces of regular prune juice, half prune / half apple juice, or plain apple juice. A glycerin suppository can help, and can be tried first, especially in babies don't drink juice (some babies gag on juice). If the constipation is ongoing, the doctor can evaluate and offer more ideas. ...Read more

I have 5 month old he's breastfeed. He also have constipation problems. My problem is that he's got a boil right beside he's butt hole. Is thatnormal?
Constipation: First, is he having hard stools? If he just doesn't have a bowel movement every day, that isn't constipation unless there are hard stools. Breast fed babies don't always poop every day- that's okay. The boil near his anus needs to be seen by his doctor. They can be caused by staph infections and may need to be drained or treated with antibiotics to clear it up. Check with your doctor. ...Read more

Five month old stooling four times a day. He is at 60% for weight and 90% for height, no apparent weight problems. Could this be malabsorption?
May be normal: If your baby is breastfeeding, four stools daily is entirely normal. If on formula, this may still be normal. If the stools are odorous and loose, it may suggest a lactose intolerance if he/she is on a dairy-based formula, however. In any case it does not sound like malabsorption as his growth is entirely appropriate at this time. Do talk to your doctor about your concerns. ...Read more
