On 10mg Lex. Take 1-300mg 5-htp in am & 1 in pm. Trying to taper off Lex. Should I take less 5-htp & only go up when I taper. Also take tryptophan.
Do not taper: On your own. Please consult your prescribing physician.
Tryptophan is an amino acid. It is the precursor to the production of serotonin. The GI system will convert tryptophan to 5 hydroxytrptophan to cross the blood brain barrier and then convert the 5htp into serotonin. It does many other things in the body, but this is what it ...Read more
Can you take trazadone 50 mg, temazepam 30 mg 1.5 grams of l-tryptophan and 325 mg of magnesium all together?
Taking a multivitamin supplement that has 100mg tryptophan. Is it safe to take it with ssri's since its known that together can cause serotonin syndrom?
I would avoid it: It's a relatively small dose ot l-tryptophan, but these supplements have been controversial for several reasons...So I advise patients to avoid them entirely. A balanced diet with adequate quality protein content will give you all the neurotransmitter substrates you need. Serotonin syndrome is uncommon, but is identified by symptoms like headache, confusion, hallucinations, racing hrt, etc.See 1 more doctor answer
A lot: Many foods contain tryptophan, an essential Amino Acid that you can only get through diet. Chicken and turkey both have tryptophan. It is required for the production of melatonin, a critical compound for our circadian sleep rhythms. Many people believe that tryptophan induces sleep, while usually it is the large fatty meals that make us feel tired and not the ingestion of tryptophan alone.
Turkey: Go ahead and enjoy your turkey. Tryptophan should not do you much - if any - harm. Just don't overload yourself with turkey, and even then there is limited side effects.
Over counter: This is an item you can find in most "health food" stores. It does not require a prescription.
Not sure what you me: Tryptophan is an Amino Acid present in many foods. It is also available as a supplement were it has absolutely no use. Unless you took an overdose of a health store supplement, there are no real effects. If you did overdose, it should wear off quickly unless you keep abusing it.
Tryptophan: Tryptophan is an amino acid. It is the precursor to the production of serotonin. The GI system will convert tryptophan to 5 hydroxytrptophan to cross the blood brain barrier and then convert the 5htp into serotonin. It does many other things in the body, but this is what it is most known for.
Tryptophan: Tryptophan is an Amino Acid that can be bought over-the-counter without prescription and helps some people with sleep. It is in high content in some foods such as turkey and high consumption can have the same effect. The research evidence is mixed and it does not meet the criteria of the fda for treatment of sleep problems. However, given that it is generally very safe it is probably worth a try.See 1 more doctor answer
Neither: Frankly, there is little evidence that either chemical treats depression. Both substances may get absorbed from the intestine, but they don't change brain levels of serotonin. Even if they did, depression is much more complicated than 'low serotonin'. Many people get a placebo boost from taking such products, double blind studies don't show them to be effective.See 1 more doctor answer
Possibly: It is possible to develop a psychological dependency on almost anything. It is unlikely, however, that you would become physically addicted to turkey.
Is it safe to take 4, 000mg of tryptophan every day long term and is it available as a prescription or just otc? Thanks!
Trypothan: Has been touted as a treatment for many disorders, but benefit and efficacy are not proven. Generally, doses are less than 1/10 of what you mentioned. Therefore, there is no data to suggest if that dose is safe, but even much smaller doses have potential toxicity and can interact with multiple medications and supplements. Best to avoid and not get medical info from friends, tv or the internet.
