Sounds like your: 4 year old may be coming down with roseola. People call it "small measles". Typically present with three days fever but it could be from 1-6 days, fever disappear and a measles type rash will present itself. Or just a plain viral infection that will take its course. Continue fever control. See your pediatrician if fever persists and / or condition gets worst! ...Read more

Virus or vision: Hi, Oscar.
Like most symptoms in kids, the tincture of time is critical. Daily headache for 3 days could be something as simple as a virus (any number of viruses cause nonspecific symptoms like headaches), sinus congestion, or even be a vision problem (like he needs glasses). Give it time to declare itself and if he's still having daily headaches in 2 weeks take him in to the doctor. ...Read more

4-year-old daughter with deep cough lasting three days. Low fever (not over 100) comes and goes. Some mild rash on back. Doctor time or wait it out?

Wait it out: It is most likely viral. Give it a few more days. If she begins having really high fevers or not eating/drinking and breathing faster, then seek medical attention. ...Read more

Four year old fever at 103.5. Doctor said tylenol (acetaminophen) and motrin back and forth but fever persist. How can I break/reduce this fever?

Cool compresses: If the fever is only for one day, even that high, you can still observe him if he is well hydrated, not lethargic & has no other symptoms. Also you ned to make sure that he is getting the right dose of fever reducers & how often you give him the dose. It could be just due to viral illness. Your child's overall condition will help to decide as well. Speak to your Pediatrician. ...Read more

Get seen: Per pubmed health, between day 2 and day 4 of the illness, the fever and aches and pains begin to go away. See: http://j.Mp/vh0jka. In young children especially it is important to seek formal medical attention, in person. Symptoms like these deserve a full evaluation in person by your health care provider. ...Read more

My 4 year old keeps getting fever every few weeks, mainly at night for a time spam of 5-6 days, what could be wrong with her? Is this cause of concern

Hard to say, ? fever: The average 4 yo will have 5-7 respiratory and 2-3 diarrheal infections per year, most of which are minor and self heal. Kids also vary in their temp with lower in the early am and higher in the afternoon. (97-99.5) this could be an issue worth studying and a visit with basic lab could rule out the worrisome causes. I doubt major problems, but you doc should check to be sure. ...Read more

Hello my 4 year old son has a fever with a headache now for 3 days. He looks dehydrated, dr gave him fever reducer but does nothing what is this?

Confusing question: Does he look dehydrated to you or the physician? Has he seen the physician today? Has he urinated in the past 6 hours? If he has not urinated in 8 hours & looks dehydrated he should see the physician today for an evaluation. I hospitalize kids for IV fluids if they are dehydrated. ...Read more

My 4 year old had fever of 103 for 2 days. It left for 6 hours and is now back (101) is this typically a sign of infection?

Yes: Did the fever leave on its own or did you give any med? A virus usually will cause a very high fever that will go up and come down all on its own without meds. A bacterial infection will more typically cause a fever that goes up and stays up and will not come down without help. Both are infections and both can be contagious. If you are concerned never be shy about calling/seeing the dr. ...Read more

My 4 year old has had a fever come & go for 3 days, she has sore gums and I noticed a blister inside her mouth. What could it be?

Viral illness: I'm sorry your daughter isn't feeling well. It sounds like she has a viral illness, possibly a virus that causes hand-foot-mouth disease. This is self-resolving, but please make sure that she is well hydrated. Her mouth and throat may hurt, so she may not eat as much, but keep her hydrated. Smaller amounts more frequently. Children's Tylenol (acetaminophen) will help with mouth pain. See doctor if not better. ...Read more

4 year old has had stuffy nose and cough 3 days tonight she seems a little worse and has a fever of 101. Normal for cold or sinus infection?

Examine: As she seems to be getting worse, have her examined. It may be a regular cold but at this point I would worry about an ear or throat infection or a possible pneumonia. She may require an antibiotic. All the best and I hope she feels better soon. ...Read more

Fever and what?: Fevers (temp more than100) are common in childhood. The key is what else is happening? Sore throat, ear pain, vomit, rash, etc? Focus on what else and you will determine the illness. If there is nothing else, your child is safe. Wait up to 1 week. If nothing declares, then go back to your doc for a recheck. If nothing, then some testing is warranted. Like chest rx blood count urine etc. ...Read more

4 year old had fever for two days, noticed swollen nodes on side of neck as well. Fever gone for two days now. When will lymph nodes go back down?

Weeks: Normal reactivity (swelling) in lymph nodes will cycle up/down over a 3-4 week period. Neck nodes are easily detected since they overlie muscles rather than being buried in tissue. If bug bites/colds/vaccines/skin rashes in the area occur they can persist. ...Read more

Can my 4 year old take cough medicine and tamiflu (oseltamivir) at the same time? Positive influenza test 4 days ago, lingering cough, fever free 48 hours. Contagious?

Yes, most: Over-the-counter children's cough medications can be taken with Tamiflu, (oseltamivir) but the cough medication may not have any added benefit and will not shorten the course. If he/she is still coughing, I would consider him/her to still be somewhat contagious through those respiratory droplets released by the cough, although one is most contagious while the fever is there ...Read more

My 4 year old has pnemonia. At 104 fever for 7 days now. He has ESR of 48, a low WBC of 5.4, low neutrophil band of 4%. What does that indicate?

Pneumonia: As a pathologist who's devoted a lifetime to the lab, it's key to remember that the history and physical tell most of the story. I'd ignore esr's on folks already clearly sick. There is no really lower limit of normal for bands; if high they suggest serious bacterial infection. Wbc can go up, down, or stay the same in a community-acquired pneumonia. Shouldn't impact treatment decisions. ...Read more

See Your Doctor Now: Fever is an indicator of infection which can have numerous causes. Young children are particularly vulnerable to serious complications. Be aware that children have limited communication skills. Cues that identify significant illness can be missed, leading to delayed medical care. This can have disastrous consequences. See your doctor now for prompt, correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment. ...Read more

Fifths: Fifths disease is a common, relatively harmless viral infection - most often seen in kids and characterized by red cheeks followed by a lacy rash on the arms, legs and body. Some people will also have fever for a day or two. It typically resolves on its own without treatment. The only time we really worry about this virus is if it infects someone who is pregnant or someone with a chronic blood disease such as sickle cell anemia, thalessemia, or spherocytosis. The virus can stop the bone marrow from producing red blood cells for a short period of time. This does not usually affect a healthy person, but can affect someone who's red blood cells are not normal in the first place. I attached a website with more information about fifths disease. If she has a chronic blood disease, if her paleness continues, or if she is acting sick at all, give her doctor a call. Good luck! ...Read more

My 4 year old and I have both had a fever this week. I have an almost 3 month old baby should I take her to emergency if she gets a fever?

Depends: She doesn't need to be seen if she just has fever, especially if this is just a virus and you and the 4yo are not that sick with it. If the 3mo is unable to keep up with her fluid needs or otherwise bothers your "mommy" sense, have her seen. ...Read more

4 year old girl with fever no other symptoms. Just over normal range.

I'm not sure what: Your question is exactly...but will speak about fever in children in general. The answer depends on the child's medical history (generally healthy/specific medical problems), how long the fever has been there, is she eating and drinking well, any travel, exposure to others who are ill, weight loss/growth. I would recommend that you speak to her doctor, giving the answers to those questions. ...Read more

Depends: The fever often depends on the type of germ involved & where it is located. Many infant illnesses are viral & fever will last several days before recovery. As long as baby is taking in enough fluids to wet every 6hrs or better, is playful for much of the day & has no specific symptoms you can let it run its course. If baby can't seem to be playful at all, looks sickly or otherwise spooks you go in. ...Read more
