Almost 7 month old baby shakes her head like saying no. I feel she just like to do this. Is this normal?

"say no": This is very likely to be normal and OK, but when you next take your baby to the doctor for follow up, let the doctor know your concern.

It's my 3 month old daughter. She shakes her head left and right often and I was wondering if that is normal or if it is something I need to be worried about.?

Follow up: This is probably a normal finding, but if you notice any eye rolling, arching or shaking of her limbs, a neurology referral can be made. If she is otherwise well and developing/growing normally, I would advise letting your PCP know at her next visit.
Monitor her temperature to check for fever. If there are other symptoms, please see your PCP. ...Read more

My 7-month old baby shakes his head from side to side when he's tired. He also flaps his arms a lot all the time. Is this normal?

Usually normal: Head banging and arm flapping is a common way for children to soothe themselves and usually nothing to worry about. However, in some kids it can be part of a developmental problem. Frequent head banging or arm flapping, particularly if you're worried about a developmental delay or unusual social interactions, should be evaluated by a doctor. ...Read more

I have random, involuntary shivers that shake my head and shoulders. Not cold. Sometimes d/t air movement (like a fan). Friend concerned. Should I be?

Probably OK: Many people experience various reactions to the environment that can't be explained precisely. This calls for avoiding or minimizing exposure to them if possible. They often just go away as mysteriously as they arrived, but if this persists and becomes a concern of yours you owe yourself at least one thorough neurologic exam by your doctor. ...Read more

My 9 months old son holds breath, shakes head and raises shoulder up and down--why does he do this?

My 9 months old son holds breath, shakes head and raises shoulder up and down--why does he do this?

Hard tosay: If this lasts a few seconds and passes, it could be as simple as a shudder attack, an odd episodic movement pattern of little significance. If he's holding his breath for more than a minute, looking at you and mad about something, it could be a breath-holding spell. Sorting this out will take a bit of history, exam and review. Catch an event on your phone and have your doc review it. ...Read more

My 2mo olds head shakes back n forth as if she's saying no. She has hydrocephalus that is treated. Nothing else I notice when this happens?

Titubation: The head bobbing from side to side is titubation and comes from damage to the midline cerebellum which is responsible for coordination and balance. While a shunt is helpful for diverting cerebrospinal fluid that is not absorbing properly, there may be a blockage or loculation of cerebrospinal fluid around the fourth ventricle. Updated imaging and an evaluation with the neurosurgeon is appropriate. ...Read more

My 2mo olds head shakes back and forth as if she's saying no, no other symptoms that I see. She has hydrocephalus that is treated. Shaking?

Head shaking: Have you discussed with your pediatric neurologist (I assume your child has one based on the diagnosis you gave)? Need smthg for severe panic when flying, involuntary shaking, body pain, irtnl fear. Xanex numbs body not mind. Dr. suggested Lexotanil. 20 hr flight?

Calm flight: Lexotanil is similar to Xanax but may be worth a try. Ask your doctor about Buspar (buspirone) for anxiety, short-acting. An eye mask may also help to calm and sleep. Avoid caffeine the day before until you've landed as it will keep you awake and heighten anxiety. Listen to "sleep music" or whatever soothing sounds you prefer on youtube. Distract yourself with pleasant reading and images. Hope this helps. ...Read more

Mgt: I would recommend a referral to Neurology. A full Neurologic and developmental assessment can be completed to determine the next step. An imaging test and EEG may be ordered at that time.

Our four month old boy seems to get fussy at times and starts shaking his arms, startles easy and makes nervous, jittery like movements. Normal?

Doctor can evaluate: Jittery or shaky movements in a startled 4-month old baby may be normal, but it is hard to tell without examining the baby and seeing the movements. The best way to do this is to make videos of the baby's movements and show the pediatrician, who can take into consideration the progress in all the areas of baby development, before deciding whether the baby's movements are normal for his age. ...Read more
