2 mo old baby passes lots smelly farts. Poop mustard yellow, smelly. Sometimes in pain. Formula and breast fed. Tried ovol, gripe, massage. Concern?
Baby poop: What you are describing all sounds very normal. The poop is a reflection of the bacteria in the baby's gut as well as your diet (as you are sometimes breast feeding). Babies often cry when trying to have bowel movements - it's a new thing for them and they have to learn how to relax a sphincter and at the same time are bearing down to push the stool out - they get frustrated/cry - it gets better ...Read more
1 month old, formula feed infant has dark green poop that smells like skunk (sometimes stringy looking)...baby is gassy as well. Is this normal?
Could be: The first thing I would want to make sure is that your child is gaining weight appropriately and thriving. If that is the case, there are numerous things that could be of help, such as different formulas. That decision can be best made with your child's doctor who will know what formula your child is and/or has been on. Good luck. ...Read more

Prob Normal: Breastfed babies normal stool are usually yellow ; pasty in consistency, ; often malodorous. Babies have limited gut microbes at birth. Babies born vaginally acquire good healthy microbes/bacteria during birth from birth canal that those born by c-section miss. Breastfed babies acquire good microbes from mom's from nursing. BRAT diet: We generally recommend the 'BRAT' diet for people with diarrhea, as it contains foods which help bind the stools. Things like Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast, plain chicken, pastas, etc. Electrolyte solutions such as Pedialyte help prevent dehydration and are better than sugary sodas or juices, which can make diarrhea worse. Some people need to avoid dairy while they are having loose stools. ...Read more

8 month old formula fed baby is having yellow foul smelling seedy diarrhea for the past two days, no other symptoms. What should I do?
Viral diarrhea: often babies will catch a virus that manifests itself as only a changed stool. This sounds like typical virally-induced stool change. I would continue the formula for now, but change the baby's solid foods to only binding foods like rice cereal, bananas and applesauce. If the baby still continues with these symptoms for more than 4 days, gets fever or vomiting, you should see a doctor in person ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Fed my baby rotten avocado. Worried about mold poisoning. What should I do? Has been having more frequent smelly well formed or liquid stools.
Prob low risk: Mold will not cause food poisoning in an otherwise healthy baby, but spoiled foods do pose a risk for bacterial food poisoning. If the baby appears ill, has blood in stool, a fever, or intractable vomiting, see the pediatrician. Without those symptoms, observation is adequate. Importantly, check food for spoilage before serving- don't give "iffy" foods! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Why is my mom's urine orange and smells really bad like rotten cheese or eggs. She's not talking any medicines and is in no pain.?
Need testing: Dark orange urine with no other symptoms in a patient who is not taking any medication could be a sign of biliary obstruction. Usually it is accompanied with light color stool. The addition of weight loss could be a sign of malignancy in the pancreas or the bile ducts. A urinalysis and a blood test is needed along with other diagnostic imaging to come up with the right diagnosis. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
11 yr old son (vegan), stool is rancid, smells like something died. He said his stool is normal in color and consistancy. What can cause this?
Incomplete digestion: Sometimes, food is passed from the small to large intestine without being completely digested; the bacteria in the large bowel then work on the incompletely digested food, causing foul odors and sometimes gas. Sugars can be a major culprit. This is very common after episodes of viral stomach flu; the virus causes lower levels of enzymes in the small bowel, which will return to normal in a few wk. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My baby is 4 months old and strictly breastfed. Why was there a long, green, mucusy, stringy thing in her poop?
Stool varies: Stool color, consistency etc. Varies with diet, hydration, viruses, etc. Granted the baby's diet hasn't changed, but sometimes the poop is effected by what mom eats. Sometimes it's a virus that turns stool green. The most important thing is that the baby continues to nurse/drink/void/stool well, and is acting normal. If everything else is fine, don't worry about a little green poop. ...Read more
