3 Year Old Not Urinating
My 3 year old says urinating hurts and she's been holding her urine in, but no temperature and is normal in every other way. Is cranberry juice best?
Let her pee in tub: If you draw a warm bath and let her sit in the warm water it will relax her pelvic muscles and she can pee in the tub with less pain. Paddling a little clean water over the pee hole is therapeutic & may help the symptoms subside. Try tub showers for a while with a spray nozzle. Sometimes this set of problems is due to sitting in soapy water that is not rinsed effectively from around the pee hole. ...Read more

My daughter is 3 years old and strains to urinate. Went for a check up today and tested urine and all results were fine. Wondering what to do next?
Common issue: This is an age where tub baths can trigger such behavior due to soapy irritation of the pee hole. These kids slosh around in dirty soapy water for a while and seldom get a proper rinse of their genitals before getting out. The soap film drys and leads to itching/burning during voids. Tub showers with attention to rinsing away any soap from the area can sometimes stop this in a few days ...Read more

3-yr old has had strong smelling urine ~1 mnth, since having a UTI. No other Sx. Urine testing has since come back negative. What could this be?
If his urine testing us coming back negative and he has no symptoms, then maybe this is diet related. I would eliminate any juice in his diet and have him drink mostly water. Milk should be limited to about 18oz per day. Green vegetables can sometimes make urine smell strong also (dont stop eating these!) maybe your dr can run a blood test to make sure his kidneys are working properly, to b safe

Sometimes: Sometimes with dehydration from vomiting and/or diarrhea the urine can have a rust colored sediment it. Make sure she is drinking plenty of fluids. If she is having any pain with urination or along her back she may have a kidney or bladder infection, which could have caused the nausea and vomiting in the first place. If she is having urinary symptoms such as urgency, pain, accidents, or blood n her urine she needs to see the doctor. ...Read more

3 yr old has ketones in urine, A1c was done results were 5.5. Blood sugars ranged from 43 to 208 in a 12 hr period. What could this mean?
A1C is normal: Ketones in a 3 year old are usually caused by not enough to eat or drink-such as overnight, during a stomach flu, etc. Blood sugars can be falsely high or low depending on how they are done; stress, infection or seizures can cause stress hormone release which temporarily can elevate blood sugar. What is going on with feeding, vomiting, etc is crucial to interpret the numbers--ask your doctor. ...Read more

3 yr old daughter had the stomach bug 2 days ago. Urinating no more then 3xday. Could her body be retaining the water bcuz of Dehydration? What can I do?
No: At least two of the normal physical responses to being sick cause the body to lose water. Rapid breathing causes loss of water vapor and increased blood flow to skin also causes evaporation. Furthermore, diarrhea causes significant loss as well. It is good to monitor her bathroom habits as reduced frequency of urination and dark color are signs of dehydration. ...Read more
