3 Week Old Baby Stuffy Nose
My 9 week old baby has had a pretty bad stuffy nose since birth. What can I do to help her breathe better, especially at night?
No meds: Medications have not been proven successful at this age and pediatricians do not recommend any over the counter cough and cold medicines for kids under 6 years. For babies of this age a nasal aspirator can help remove the thick mucus in their noses- the blue bulb syringe can do the same. Humidification may also help. Most importantly keep them hydrated- increase the frequency of breastfeeding. ...Read more
Saline nasal drops +: Simplest method is to use saline nasal drops followed by nasal suction either with the rubber bulb syringe you probably got when baby was born or with newer (somewhat more expensive, but safer, according to their claims) nosefrida suction kit or babycomfy nose aspirator. There are infant decongestant drops, but they are not for use in under 3 months of age. See doc if no improvement. ...Read more
My 20 day old newborn started today with stuffy nose and cough. Is there something I can give or do to her? Any advice & thanks in advance
? irritants?: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages & exposure to dust, fragrences, smoke & other irritants aggravate this. Baby tries to flush these out of the nose with mucous but this often ends as congestion & produces rattling with breathing. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline &suctioning the remainder. Eliminate irritants from babies environment &this will happen less. ...Read more

Are inhalant allergies common in a newborn? I care for a 1 month old, a stuffy nose for two days. A temperature of 99.6 started today.
Allergies uncommon: Newborns depend on small nasal passages for breathing. Common irritants like dust, fragrance, smoke, paint fumes, cooking odors, etc. Can all cause congestion. Regular use of saline nasal wash can remove these irritants so baby can breathe easier. A temperature of 99.6 is normal @ this age. ...Read more
My infant is five months has a dry cough for a week and has a runny stuffy nose no fever should I take him to doctor is it a cold?
Cough: It is always hard to know when to take your baby to the doctor. If he is eating, drinking, pooping, peeing and acting otherwise well and having no fever then I would say no. If he has any trouble breathing, the cough becomes worse, he gets a fever, he becomes lethargic, dehydrated or you are just too worried then get him seen. Worried Mommas are always right. ...Read more

Nasal saline: Liberal use of nasal saline wash or spray can help an infant thin out their nasal secretions & increase the effective size of their airway. Suction may or may not retrieve the excess & it's ok if it drains into the stomach. It can be used as often as needed. Also make an attempt to remove any aggravating odors or fumes from babies space. Smoke or perfumes can be hard on baby. ...Read more
I have some mucus or postnasal drip in the back of my throat. No cough, no fever, stuffy nose, but my throats feels irritated. Not sore because I eat and drink just fine. What could be going on? I have a newborn so I don't want to be contagious.
Wear a mask: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). A newborn is vulnerable to catching other people's infections. ...Read more
Nasal saline: Nasal saline is to me the best single agent if the rx of a stuffy nose. Using liberal amounts you can accomplish 2 goals. Thinning the thickened secretions & washing irritants like dust, smoke particles & pollen away. It also helps to evaluate babies exposures & avoid irritants. Perfumes, dust, cooking & cleaning fumes, scented laundry soaps etc all can prolong a babies stuffiness. ...Read more

My 3 week old baby has a congested nose and cough. His doctor only prescribed nasal drops but nothing for the cough. What can I give him?
Nasal wash: At 7 weeks the primary cause of congestion is the environment. House dust, fragrance, perfumes, detergent or cleaning products all leave scents that may not bother you but irritate a babies nose. A good nasal clean out with saline can remove much of this irritant load, but removing the offending irritants from babies life helps more in the long run. Air particle filters can also help. ...Read more
My 1 month old baby has a stuffy nose and wakes up a lot during the night because of it. What can I do to get rid of his stuffy nose?
Humidity: A humidifier will help, as will using saline drops right in the nose to loosen the mucous. If someone is taking a shower, someone else sitting in bathroom in the steam from the shower is also helpful. Put the humidifier right next to the baby's crib. Putting it across the room doesn't do much good. ...Read more

5day old 99 degree temp stuffy nose does she need to go to doc? She has slept most of day and only eaten three times. Still has wet dispers.
Call doctor: When a newborn is sick it is always best to at least call the baby's doctor and discuss what is going on. A 5 day old is still pretty fragile, so better to be safe than sorry. The doctor will also be able to put the symptoms in context of the delivery 5 days ago: easy, difficult, c-section, meconium, etc. ...Read more
Is there any risk of anesthesia in 6 monrh old baby for laproscopic orchiepexy. If not what risks associated when he has cold and stuffy nose?
Anesthesia: There is always a risk from anesthesia regardless of age of patient or which type is used. This doesn't mean that the risk is particularly high for any one specific case. Please discuss this with the anesthesiologist who will be working with the baby. S/he will know more about the child's health and the type of anesthesia proposed. Take care. ...Read more

My 9 month old baby has stuffy nose and phlegm, what is good to give him or make to get rid of the phlegm.?
Stuffy nose: In infants, the use of saline nasal spray and suction of mucus when it loosens is one treatment; also a vaporizor for the steam or sitting in the bathroom running hot water in shower to make steam will help loosen the mucus for suctioning with the white or blue nasal/ear bulbs they sell over the counter. ...Read more
My baby is 4 months old he has a bad cough and stuffy nose I went to the dr today and he prescribed dimetapp for him 0.7 ml twice a day is that ok?
No: Do NOT give honey to your 2 month old. Honey can be very dangerous in a child less than 1 year old. 2 month olds don't typically get sore throats and honey won't cure a stuffy nose. If your 2 month old is sick, they should be evaluated by a pediatrician. If they have a fever, they need to be seen urgently. ...Read more
