3 Week Old Baby Coughing
Yes and no: Three times in a day doesn't sound like an illness as much as it may be baby clearing his/her airway. Babies are quite sensitive to smoke/ dust/fragrances/ cleaning odors/etc. And may become congested and or cough in response. You need to eliminate these from babies environment and flush the nose if needed with saline. Increasing cough or change in feeding habits could signal a problem.See 1 more doctor answer
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

My 3 week old baby is all stuffed up he's snorting is there anything I can do to help him breath better?
My 3 week old baby sleeps all the time. I usually have to wake him to eat. He has a good appetite. Is this normal?
My 3 week old baby hasn't pooped. It's almost been 24houea and she pushes really hard like she needs to go. She is bottle fed.
Simple measures: You can help baby go by coating a q-tip with vasaline & inserting it the length of the cotton & moving it in a circle. If there's poo to go it should come out. There are otc babylax suppositories that work the same way. For longer term an ounce of full strength apple or prune juice 1-2x/d will losten baby within 3 days.
Yes: Simethacone is often used for infants gas issues. I am not convinced they do much, but some parents swear by them.See 1 more doctor answer
Breast feeding: Breast fed babies may have a stool with each feeding, hve one once a day or go a, s long as a week without having one. This is normal for breast fed babies. The stool may also be on the watery side. Again, all normal. Enjoy your baby.
My 3 week old baby vomits some after every feeding, but is doing fine in general. Why is she vomiting?
See below: This is normal baby spitting. It can be due the baby taking to much at a feeding, not burping well, or being laid down right after feeding. This will resolve as your child ages.
I have a 3 week old baby, I'm constantly worried she's going to catch a cold or flu. Is it common at this age to get colds?
No: The more common reason for nasal congestion or cough at that age is exposure to dust/fragrances/smoke /cooking or cleaning odors/etc. Babies tiny nasal passages react to things you tend to ignore. If you eliminate these from babies surroundings and use nasal saline to help wash them out, baby will be less congested.
My 3 week old baby has a lot of gas. She only gives 1 BM a day. She is strictly formula fed. What could cause this? How can I help her?
Common: For Babies started on formula soon after birth it is common to develop lots of gas. Reasons cld be 1) lactose intolerance 2) cows milk protein sensitivity 3) neither, with lots of swallowing of air during feeding from a bottle. Discuss these with pediatrician & u may want to try a different formula or bottles to address the problems. One BM a day, esp constipation, is also common with formula.See 1 more doctor answer
Is it concerning that my 3 week old baby squeeks while breastfeeding? Sometimes she squeeks outside of feeding but not as often as when she is feeding
Noisy feeder: It is very common for infants to make noises while they are feeding and the causes are many, most of which are of no major concern. Noises associated with color change of the face, choking and gagging, or feeding difficulties should be evaluated. Adequate weight gain as monitored routinely by your pediatrician is a good sign that this is not a significant issue.See 1 more doctor answer
Confusing signals: Most people don't understand that a baby sucks for pleasure, not simply as a sign of hunger. The high concentration of pleasure sensors on the lips assures that baby will latch and learn to feed, after a pregnancy where they did not. Do not feel obligated to offer supplements or feed again just because they are sucking. If they are gaining well, they are getting enough.
He should be immune: The answer depends on whether or not mom's antibodies got into the newborn before birth. If mom got shingles, that means she had chicken pox in the past, so mom does have antibodies. If baby is term and healthy, he received mom's antibodies and should not be vulnerable to the virus for at least 2 months. After 2-3 months of age, his "maternal" antibodies start fading away, and he is vulnerable.See 2 more doctor answers
Not rare: Any secretions will color within hours due to normal bacteria living on the nasal membranes. Baby needs a good clean out with nasal saline and suction. Remove irritants from babies environment like dust/smoke/fragrences/etc. These all increase their drainage. If babies feedings decline or s/he begins to "act sick", monitor temperature and contact the doc.
