3 Day Potty Training At 18 Months Old
I've begun potty training my 3 year old daughter, but she fearful & is holding it for a long time (one day for 18 hours). What can I do to help her?
Several things: First, the ability to be toilet trained depends on neurological maturation. Second, toilet training is a skill that is easily shaped through positive reinforcement. Failures should be ignored and successes praised. Putting too much emphasis on the toilet training and failures can increase the child's resistance. Most children learn this skill easily if done in a relaxed manner. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
A toddler who walks: from room to room, pulls his/her pants & pull-up or underpants up & down & says " pee-pee", "poo-poo" or "potty" to indicate he senses the urge to "go" is ready for daytime toilet training. If not, you may create a behavior problem . There's no harm in putting a potty chair in the bathroom for the child to sit on while you model using the toilet, but don't force the child to sit on it. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I am potty training my 3 year old who has a strong personality. The only method that has worked is by having her naked. She still bed wets. Any advice?
Put her clothes on: If you have done rehearsal & she knows where the stuff is the best thing you can do is become her assistant, not her drill sergeant. A strong willed child must first understand when she gets the feeling she needs to go, & feel happy she is responding to that need.Telling her no more than twice a day that you will help is crucial. You can provide incentives for doing big girl things but relax. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Toilet Training: According to the NIH, your baby will probably be ready closer to 18 months. A baby will let you know when he or she is ready by signaling to you that their diaper needs changing. At that point, you can start training using a reward system and daily encouragement to use the toilet. Here is a link for you:https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/toilettraining.html ...Read more

Potty trained 4YO: If she is doing generally well and just occasional accidents, that is very different than if she is still struggling. Please talk to your pediatrician, but also see an experienced Child Psychologist(someone who did a Fellowship in Child Psychology). Sometimes children are experiencing stress that a parent may not know about, or recognize is relevant. Don't give up though! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
How do I explain to my 3 year old when he asks me why is my penis big? I started potty training and he is asking so many questions
Short simple answers: A 3 yo is curious and their questions can be difficult when you let the issue of genitals/sex cloud the picture. At that age short simple answers are the best. Don't launch into lengthy discussions. "that's how it is"is honest & developmentally appropriate.Expect the same ? Seveal times (they don't take notes). After he gets to 7-8 the questions can be answered in more depth. ...Read more
3.9 year old with autism seems ready for potty training but won't sit on potty long enough. Is the iPotty (potty with iPad stand) a good idea for him?
Do you really want : to pair those behaviors? Once you do, transition to a regular toilet is going to be tough! Use his developmental, not chronological, age, for readiness: Can he stay dry for 2 hrs., walk from room to room, recognize the urge to go, use a word to say so (e.g., potty) & pull his pants up & down? If so, use a Little Looster stool & read " Steps to Independence" by Baker, ~$30 on Amazon.com. ...Read more

Whats the normal age to start potty training my son? He's 19months old now and i feel like he should be potty trained?
Around 2: Most kids train around their second birthday. However, with any developmental milestone, age varies from child to child. You should not "expect" him to be trained by now, nor can he sing the national anthem yet. But he may be showing signs of interest, and then it's ok to start working with him. Many toddlers show some initial interest and then back away. Be patient and work with them, not against. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
