3 Day Potty Training At 18 Months Old
I've begun potty training my 3 year old daughter, but she fearful & is holding it for a long time (one day for 18 hours). What can I do to help her?
Several things: First, the ability to be toilet trained depends on neurological maturation. Second, toilet training is a skill that is easily shaped through positive reinforcement. Failures should be ignored and successes praised. Putting too much emphasis on the toilet training and failures can increase the child's resistance. Most children learn this skill easily if done in a relaxed manner. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
A toddler who walks: from room to room, pulls his/her pants & pull-up or underpants up & down & says " pee-pee", "poo-poo" or "potty" to indicate he senses the urge to "go" is ready for daytime toilet training. If not, you may create a behavior problem . There's no harm in putting a potty chair in the bathroom for the child to sit on while you model using the toilet, but don't force the child to sit on it. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I am potty training my 3 year old who has a strong personality. The only method that has worked is by having her naked. She still bed wets. Any advice?
Put her clothes on: If you have done rehearsal & she knows where the stuff is the best thing you can do is become her assistant, not her drill sergeant. A strong willed child must first understand when she gets the feeling she needs to go, & feel happy she is responding to that need.Telling her no more than twice a day that you will help is crucial. You can provide incentives for doing big girl things but relax. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Toilet training: Many Asian cultures start training around one. In the United States, training is suggested when a cold can indicate the need to toilet, is physically capable of sitting unsupported on the toilet, can remove underwear or diaper without assistance and is not fearful of the toilet. Whats the normal age to start potty training my son? He's 19months old now and i feel like he should be potty trained?
Around 2: Most kids train around their second birthday. However, with any developmental milestone, age varies from child to child. You should not "expect" him to be trained by now, nor can he sing the national anthem yet. But he may be showing signs of interest, and then it's ok to start working with him. Many toddlers show some initial interest and then back away. Be patient and work with them, not against. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Caudal regression: syndrome, in which parts of the lower half of the body do not develop properly, is rare, but less rare in infants of diabetic mothers. If the lower spine & sacrum (pelvic bone) are malformed or the sacrum is absent, problems controlling bowel and bladder can occur. Ask her pediatrician to look for physical findings, then (s)he'll order X-rays or MRI & make appropriate referrals, if CRS is present. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Toilet Training: According to the NIH, your baby will probably be ready closer to 18 months. A baby will let you know when he or she is ready by signaling to you that their diaper needs changing. At that point, you can start training using a reward system and daily encouragement to use the toilet. Here is a link for you:https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/toilettraining.html ...Read more
I have a two year old boy im potty training him but he freaks out he doesn't want to take off the diaper?
Too early?: Parents are highly motivated to toilet train their children ( less mess, less expense). Unfortunately, toddlers frequently are not ready as soon as the parents would like. Boys in particular are later to be ready for this training. I do not think that your son is ready for toilet training developmentally, and would recommend waiting until he is older. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Been potty training my daughter since she was two years old, She's now four &will sit on the potty, do nothing,Is she being stubborn or something else?
Adaptive/Self-Help: Delays require medical, neurological & developmental assessment. Medical causes may require referral to a specialist. Behavioral causes from parents' accidentally having reinforced toileting refusal may require referral to a child psychologist & a pediatric GI to manage stool-withholding & constipation wth techniques like those in comments, if health is fine & development is otherwise typical. ...Read more

Possibly: Any stress can cause a regression, many medications have side effects and a more detailed discussion would be important to determine if the regression is related to the med or possibly something else. At 5 there might be a number of things that might cause a regression in potty training. Need to rule out a uriunary tract infection. See your pediatrician or Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) prescriber. ...Read more
Mt daughter is 4 years old. Been potty training since 2 yes old, could it be psychological, please Help, she'll be attending school next month?
Potty trained 4YO: If she is doing generally well and just occasional accidents, that is very different than if she is still struggling. Please talk to your pediatrician, but also see an experienced Child Psychologist(someone who did a Fellowship in Child Psychology). Sometimes children are experiencing stress that a parent may not know about, or recognize is relevant. Don't give up though! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
How do I explain to my 3 year old when he asks me why is my penis big? I started potty training and he is asking so many questions
Short simple answers: A 3 yo is curious and their questions can be difficult when you let the issue of genitals/sex cloud the picture. At that age short simple answers are the best. Don't launch into lengthy discussions. "that's how it is"is honest & developmentally appropriate.Expect the same ? Seveal times (they don't take notes). After he gets to 7-8 the questions can be answered in more depth. ...Read more
3.9 year old with autism seems ready for potty training but won't sit on potty long enough. Is the iPotty (potty with iPad stand) a good idea for him?
Do you really want : to pair those behaviors? Once you do, transition to a regular toilet is going to be tough! Use his developmental, not chronological, age, for readiness: Can he stay dry for 2 hrs., walk from room to room, recognize the urge to go, use a word to say so (e.g., potty) & pull his pants up & down? If so, use a Little Looster stool & read " Steps to Independence" by Baker, ~$30 on Amazon.com. ...Read more

Is it normal for a 4 year old not ready for potty training ? He can talk and is developmently normal. He can even read. It doesn't make sense .
Reading at age 4 is : not developmentally typical. Hyperlexia, reading decoding above age & grade level, sometimes occurs in kids with non-verbal learning disabilities, oddly enough, or Autistic Spectrum Disorder without cognitive impairment. Combined with a delay in self-help skills, it warrants evaluation by a developmental/ behavioral pediatrician & a child neuropsychologist for accurate diagnosis & treatment. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
What do you suggest if my kid is autism he's going to 4 yrs old with ppd-nos!!!! question about potty training!?
Day 3 of potty training & my toddler wants to sit on the potty the whole day. I talked with him several times, he refuses to play, what should I do?
Don't be Stubborn: It can be easy to get into a habit of arguing and it's good to avoid that. In most cases, it will pass on its own. You can entice him away with an activity or person he enjoys but just make a brief offer, then leave. You can out last him. If this sort of stubborness persists, find a gentle child psychologist for eval and play therapy. In any case, keep it light and easy. Good luck. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
