My child has gastroenteritis and diarrhea. Should I give him imodium(r)?

My child has gastroenteritis and diarrhea. Should I give him imodium(r)?

No...: The most likely cause of this is a virus and needs to clear out of the GI tract. The most important thing to do is to keep your child well hydrated. If he is able to drink fluids (don't worry about solid foods at this time), then keep giving him liquids. Also, take note of his urine output — if he is not urinating and looks dry, unable to take fluids, then take him to the nearest er for IV fluid. ...Read more

I have chronic constipation problems and I took imodium (loperamide) due to diarrhea last two days, could there be a problem? Should i not continue imodium (loperamide)?

I have chronic constipation problems and I took imodium (loperamide) due to diarrhea last two days, could there be a problem? Should i not continue imodium (loperamide)?

Dietary intake: It is unclear why you are having diarrhea on top of 'chronic constipation'. Imodium (loperamide) should be fine. For the constipation suggest that you increase the fiber in your diet or take one of the many otc preps to increase the bulk of your stool. You might try eating a cup of unpasteurized yogurt twice a day and by so doing alter your bowel bacteria and the character of your stools. Good luck. ...Read more

My two year old has had 4 watery diarrhea in the past 24 hours. He has no other symptoms, in fact he is playful and running around. What could this be?

Diarrhea: It could be a few things. One of the more common things is drinking too much juice — keep it to 6-8 ounces a day max. He could also have a minor virus — commonly known as stomach flu. If he is having bad abdominal pain, fever, or blood in stool, these are more serious things. The final thing for benign diarrhea is teething. Even at his age kids can get loose stool with teething. ...Read more

My two year old daughter has been continuously very cranky, and upset. She has been having bright yellow diarrhea, but no other signs. What is this?

Be seen: It is likely a viral gastroenteritis, but possibly something else. She should be seen by her physician for an exam and opinion. However, there are not any meds that are necessarily needed for a child her age, as she is still in diapers, and will clear the virus faster if you allow it to run its course. Keep her hydrated as that is generally what causes hospitalization needs. ...Read more

Two year old vomiting and yellow green diarrhea for six days every time eats or drinks. Should I take her back in?

Two year old vomiting and yellow green diarrhea for six days every time eats or drinks. Should I take her back in?

Dehydration: We worry about the little ones getting dehydrated if they go for too long with vomiting and diarrhea. Things that would make me more concerned: looking sluggish, pale, not urinating as much, not making tears or their mouth looks dry. Also, if they're still having fevers after 6 days. But if one of my patients wasn't able to hold anything down after 6 days, I'd want to see them regardless. ...Read more

My two year old was vomitting on Sunday and had yellow diarrhea, it is now solid but still bright yellow. He barely has eaten for a week and ihas gas?

The color of the: Stool is normal for a diarrheal illness. It sounds like he has had a virus which is resolving. The virus causes the intestines to not be able to absorb properly temporarily, which causes that color. The gas is also normal as a virus is resolving. Try as best you can to get him to eat more (even if he has diarrhea) and he will get better faster. Please consult with his doctor if he isn't. ...Read more

Salmonella has given me bad diarrhea. Should I take imodium (loperamide)?

No: If you have diarrhea from salmonella, you can take clear liquids and a bland diet until the diarrhea resolves. How do I stop the constipation after taking imodium (loperamide) for diarrhea?

How do I stop the constipation after taking imodium (loperamide) for diarrhea?

Diarrhea meds: Try not to take meds for diarrhea. Your body is trying to get rid of something — virus, bacteria or toxins and you do not want to keep them in. This is a temporary condition, fortunately. The Imodium (loperamide) will wear off. Meanwhile, drink 6-8 cups of fluid a day, plenty of fiber- fruits, vegetables, and exercise. For most people a bowel movement every 1-2 days is normal. ...Read more
