Why do uterine fibroids cause such horrible pain and heavy periods? I have two small ones near my cervix.

Depends on location: It sounds like these are submucous fibroids, meaning they are inside the uterine cavity. Submucous fibroids don't have to be very buff to cause problems like heavy bleeding.
