My doc has prescribed me 17 hydroxyprogesterone, androsstenedione, 25 hydroxy d tests. Bt i think i hv cushings. Wil these indicate cortisol levels too?

No: Elevated 17 hydroxyprogesterone and androstenedione are indicative of certain forms of late onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia (cah) a condition that usually leads to mild cortisol deficiency. Cushing syndrome is cortisol excess. The two could share some signs but are quite different. Cushing syndrome is screened for with 24h urine free cortisol and overnight Dexamethasone suppression test. ...Read more

Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (Definition)

It is one of several pituitary hormones - acth for short (the others control the thyroid gland, gonad glands, and others) that controls adrenal gland function in primarily making the hormone called cortisol (not to be confused with "adrenaline"), though the adrenal gland also ...Read more

Slightly high 17 -hydroxyprogesterone level. What it means?

Slightly high 17 -hydroxyprogesterone level. What it means?

CAH: This is most commonly do to non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia or ncah. If 17-hydroxyprogesterone levels are just slightly above normal, the correlation may not be very clear cut. If 17 -hydroxyprogesterone level is elevated and pcos symptoms are present, ncah should be considered. ...Read more

I'm having a 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) lab to test for non-classical form of CAH. When is the best time during my menstrual cycle to have this?

I'm having a 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) lab to test for non-classical form of CAH. When is the best time during my menstrual cycle to have this?

A 17-OHP test can be: done any time in the menstrual cycle. You may need to fast for 8 hrs. before the test. Birth control pills, steroids & other meds alter results; tell your MD all prescription, OTC, herbal & illicit drugs you take. If your 17-OHP level is equivocal, your doctor may order an ACTH test & molecular genetic studies for CYP21 gene mutations on Chr. 6p21.33 for definitive diagnosis. ...Read more

Acth stimulation test w/poor response. I was told to wear a med bracelet and take prednisone. How do I know if it's addison's vs adrenal isufficiency?

Acth stimulation test w/poor response. I was told to wear a med bracelet and take prednisone. How do I know if it's addison's vs adrenal isufficiency?

Antibody: You have adrenal insufficiency. That's already proven on your acth stim test. Addison is one cause for adrenal insufficiency. The diagnosis is made by checking for adrenal antibodies. ...Read more

What is the acth plasma stimulation test?

What is the acth plasma stimulation test?

Inject syn. ACTH: Hi. It's a test for primary adrenal insufficiency (where the adrenal glands themselves have failed) where synthetic ACTH(1-24), the N-terminal 24 amino acid peptide of native ACTH, is injected IV, and the adrenal response in making cortisol is measured at 0, 30, and 60 minutes. Dead adrenals don't respond. The ACTH-stim test does not reliably test for pituitary disease. ...Read more

What is ab acth plasma stimulation test used for?

Adrenal insufficienc: If an individual's adrenals may not be making enough cortisone to live (symptoms include fatigue, abdominal pain, dizziness, nausia), this is tested. If someone has needed to be on repeated or prolonged Prednisone or quite high inhaled corticosteroids for a prolonged period, adrenal insufficiency is a possibility. Adrenal insufficiency may also be related to autoimmune causes. ...Read more

What is plasma acth cortisol response?

What is plasma acth cortisol response?

Test adrenal fxn.: This test is to check on whether or not your adrenal glands are working right. The acth action is to increase production and release of corticosteroids. In the test, a small amount of synthetic acth is injected and the amount of cortisol the adrenals produce in response is measured. This is used to check for things like primary and secondary adrenal insufficiency, and addison's disease. ...Read more
