An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more
How accurate is ultrasound done at 20 weeks for gender determination of fetus. Is obstretics ultrasound with same accuracy. Same question for 22 wks?
Depends.: My rule has always been: don't guess! If the fetus is in a poor position for viewing the genitals then no determination can be made. At 20 weeks, if the genital region is visible there is a very high level of accuracy for gender determination. It all depends on the skill of the person doing the scan. ...Read more

Are baby gender ultrasounds accurate? Is there any chance that an ultrasound showing my baby's gender is wrong? I'd hate to completely prepare for a b?
Depends on variables: I would never decorate my nursery based on a baby gender ultrasound. Those done around 20 weeks are likely to be accurate in the hands of a skilled technician, but the boy parts must decide to show themselves or they may be overlooked. I've heard of more moms being surprised by boys than girls. ...Read more

Mid second trimester: Most of the time it is possible to determine gender after about 14 weeks. A good time to determine gender is between 18 and 20 weeks because that is the recommended time to perform a fetal anatomic survey. ...Read more
Depends on tech: Genital differentiation is complete by 11-12 weeks but the relative size & positioning of structures may make it difficult to call at that point. Mr turtle needs to stick his head out to get noticed & that may not happen while the ultrasound is being done. ...Read more
3 different ultrasound measurements all done in 1st tri. Agree within one day of each other. All were taken within 2 weeks of each other. Accuracy??
Excellent: If all agree then gestational age is higher accurate meaning you can probably pinpoint the date of conception. However, despite this, it is not as good a predictor of the exact date of delivery. Many other things can influence when the process of delivering a baby. It will likely be very close to the predicted date. ...Read more
How accurate are 12 week ultrasounds with gender? They were incorrect with my last child so just want to know if they are most likely wrong again?
Not very accurate: The accuracy will vary depending on the experience of the sonographer and the ability to locate the genital area on ultrasound. In one study: at 12 weeks, when the genital area was successfully visualized, gender identification was correct 92% of the time. At 13 weeks it was correct 98% of the time. **In this study a very experienced physician, not a technician, did the studies. ...Read more
Water, if needed: Some physicians want to do imaging when patients have a full bladder; others don't have a preference. Visualizing genitalia depends on the us type done (vaginal vs abdominal), gestational age, fetal position and gender (boys>girls tend to give away the 'secret'). It is best to call the office to ask what the sonographer or doctor prefers before filling the bladder and making oneself uncomfortable. ...Read more
Yes: Ultrasound is what we call an operator dependent modality. That is, the skill of the people doing ; reading the scan determines the adequacy of the interpretation if a picture does not clearly show the gender, mistakes will be made. Sometimes a loop of cord will be confused with a scrotum. My rule was always, "if you're not sure of the gender, say nothing!" that's how I was always right. :-). ...Read more
Depends: The position of the fetus can be important in being able to see the area of interest. Some males are clearly seen at 12 weeks. Testicles are not fully descended unto the scrotum until 24-28 wks. If the fetal position is favorable gender can usually be confidently determined by 14-16 weeks. Individual results will vary. ...Read more
You can see: At around 20 weeks, the genitalia are visible my ultrasound, so given the right image you can see if this will be a little boy or girl. Sometimes however, depending on the babies position in the womb it can be difficult to tell with certainty. ...Read more
Question?: I'm confused as to what your question is. Your baby's gender can almost always be determined by an ultrasound study after 17-18 weeks. On occasion, it can be difficult to see well enough if the baby is in a "funny" position or if you are quite obese. On occasion, you might be told female gender and be surprised by a boy at birth. He was hiding his stuff. The reverse situation does not occur. ...Read more
Edd from 11 wk ultrasound is 11/12/13. What dates of sex could have led to this? Jan 18 fit into this range? What is the accuracy of 11 wk ultrasound?

Depends on variables: Although the parts may be present it is difficult to be accurate on gender assessment at 12 weeks. In the hands of a skilled tech with a high resolution probe this can sometimes be suggestive. However, it is more reliable around 18-20 wks. Even then, I have seen folks who decorated a nursery based on us have to repaint when baby delivered. ...Read more

Does a level 2 ultrasound tell you, your babys gender and do they. Give 3d pics after the handle the important aspects of the test? Hwhats its cost?
Concerned about edd accuracy. Is it possible for ultrasound measurements in the first try to be a month off? All of my edds have matched through preg.
Yes: If your doctor or technician made an error on your first tri ultrasound, then it would be possible for your edd to be wrong. If ur saying that every us you had after your 1st tri us agreed with each other and gave a different edd, consider discussing with ur doc to have edd changed. 1st tri us are most accurate, but you are right to suggest that person can make a mistake while performing. ...Read more
At an ultrasound, what determines if you are 12 weeks or 12 weeks + 4 days? Are measurements this precise? And the accuracy correlates with your LMP too?
Crown Rump Length: At twelve week on ultrasound, the sonographer measures the fetus' crown rump length (crl). This measurement is from the base of skull to tailbone. Ultrasounds at twelve weeks are accurate within 7 days. If you were 12 weeks by LMP and 12 4/7 weeks by sono, you due date would stay consistent with your lmp. ...Read more
If I get a 3d ultrasound do I have to learn to gender? I want to see my baby in 3d, but I want the gender to be a surprise. Possible? What should I tell the tech to make sure this happens?
Yes, : Yes, it is possible to image your baby in 3-d and not reveal the gender. Tell the ultrasound technologist that you would like 3-d images of the face, hand, foot, etc. Also, let the ultrasound technologist know that you do not wish to find out the gender of the baby. Generally, the ultrasound technologist will do his/her best to accommodate the request of the patient as long as the request is within reason. ...Read more
