My 6 week old baby has calcaneovalgus do you think he should be in casts or will massaging work? How long do babies normally take to recover with th

Hard to say: The chances that massage & manipulation would work in a given case depend on features only evident on physical exam. The more flexability, the better the chance. Only a well trained pediatric podiatrist or pediatric orthopedist would be able to predict this and only after an exam. ...Read more

My newborn baby that 19, days old and she keeps crying I think she constipated, what can I give my new infant baby for the pain. Can suppositories use?

Constipation: Is hard and infrequent stools. You can give a glycerin suppository once and see igf that helps. Baby may be crying if mom is breastfeeding and drinking milk, eating dairy. If using milk based formula then can also cause tummy ache. Baby could be colicky too. Go see your doctor and discuss this. You will feel better and so will baby! ...Read more

Is it normal for babies to skip milestones? My 7mo is army crawling but just started pulling up on things. Seems he should have mastered crawling 1st.

Crawling is the most: Variable gross motor milestone, moreso since infants are now placed on their backs for sleep. More infants with neurodevelopmental disorders skip crawling than typically-developing infants, but it happens in both. Your pediatrician & OT/PT at your state's Early Intervention Program can check muscle tone, strength, reflexes, & pattern of movement. Developmental screens are on firstsigns. Org ...Read more

My 24 months son have ankle clonus in both sides since newborn. Mostly clonus occured less than 5 beats, he has a good milestone. Is it normal?

Within Normal Limits: Ankle clonus is only considered pathologic with other abnormal neurologic findings on exam, a history of abnormal neurologic behavior, and sustained clonus. Your son has none of those findings, he is okay ...Read more

28 months boy have 4-5 beats ankle clonus in both side since newborn, without other symptoms. He have a good milestone, he can walking-running normally.

The significance of: Ankle clonus in infancy is not reliably known and relates to the number of beats (>10 seemingly important) and persistence at advancing age. The fact that your son has reached developmental milestones normally is very important. I would, however, have your son followed by a good neurologist as there are possible issues down the road. Good wishes:) ...Read more

How does a newborn infant get a pneumothorax and what's the difference between that an a tension pneumo?

How does a newborn infant get a pneumothorax and what's the difference between that an a tension pneumo?

Colapsed Lung: A pneumothorax occurs when air gets in the the space between the chest wall and the lung. This space should not contain anything. So when air gets in, the lungs have to become smaller. A tension-pneumothorax is when the contents of the chest (heart, lung, collapsed lung) all shift to one side. Typically this is life threatening because blood cannot flow well. We don't always know why this is. ...Read more

Can similac advance infant formula with iron make a newborn constipated?

Can similac advance infant formula with iron make a newborn constipated?

Not specifically: This is an old myth that is perpetuated year to year. Iron given at therapeutic levels can cause constipation, but studies find no correlation with the level in formula. Infants may process one brand of formula slower or faster than another and any delay in emptying will lead to constipation. ...Read more

What if newborn infant boy pees into his eyes? Does he need any medicine to prevent infection? Thanks!

I have a hh agency (new), peds & just had first time request for light therapy for newborn jaundice infant. What complications are there?

See below: Blue light therapy for jaundice is standard for breaking down the bilirubin that is being produced and seen in the skin and sclera. As long as the child's eyes are protected and hydration is monitored along with the bilirubin levels (by a health care professional), I fore see no complications as long as the bilirubin level is lowering and the child is not sick as well. ...Read more

22 months Boy have ankle clonus since he 3 weeks old. He have a normal milestone&posture. Could a normal child have a clonus for the rest in his life?

Nl devel reassuring: It is very reassuring that your child's development has been very normal in spite of ankle clonus. It is not uncommon to see several beats of anke clonus in healthy children and for children to tiptoe with walking for the first few years, but continuous clonus is unusual and subtle signs of muscle tightness may show up in the future. Hopefully not. ...Read more

Could you know what the milestones of a 6 month old baby are?

Because implicit: memory begins at 5 months, learned behaviors begin at 6 months. Babies who fall asleep in their own cribs without a "sleep association" settle back to sleep if they night wake. Socially, they have stranger anxiety. They lift their arms to be picked up, effective non-verbal communication. They inhibit a behavior to "no" & re-direction. They babble in "strings" (da-da-da-da) & have a raking grasp. ...Read more

Major developmental milestones to be observed in a 6 month old baby boy?

Develop milestones: Six month olds are generally sitting unsupported (briefly), holding a cup/bottle, rolling both directions, babbling including consonants, responding to emotions of others, passing objects from one hand to the other, searches briefly for objects, and brings objects to the mouth. What is head bobbing means. Worried about that in my 10 m old otherwise normal healthy baby with development milestones met. Ped assured not infantile s?

Though there are: Many fairly benign causes of head-bobbing I'd be uncomfortable reassuring any parent without pediatric neurological & ophthalmological evaluations. Spasmus nutans alone, e.g., starts between 4 mos-3 yrs. & often resolves on its own. It's accompanied by nystagmus, rapid eye movements. Gastroesophageal Reflux is another possibility. I'd look into it a bit more. ...Read more

1year3month old baby boy. Jerks 2or3 times a day. Active and development milestones meti. Is this kind of jerks normal? Kindof jerk while urinating

Jerking Episodes: HellCat262243. The jerking described is not typical. Infants, particularly newborns, have a startle reflex, but it passes after several months old. Any type of jerking needs assessment with thorough questioning and I recommend an evaluation by a Neurologist. Video taping the episodes can further assist the Neurologist. Stranger anxiety: At age 9 months, a baby is supposed to have stranger anxiety. It is normal for babies, toddlers, and other young children to be scared of loud noises. Even adults are scared of loud noises that are unfamiliar. Such reactions are ingrained into the human brain by nature. ...Read more

Is it normal for a 14 month old child to have only 2 teeth? The baby is on target with height, weight and developmental milestones. In fact he seems fairly bright. He just doesn't have more than 2 teeth. Thank you, worried grammie

Within norma limits: Some children teeth faster than others, some slower. Probably nothing to be concerned about. That said, make an appointment with a pediatric dental specialist to asses dent-facial growth and development, teething pattern, Fluoride balance, diet, oral hygiene, and so much more. Don't wait until age 2-3, please go now. ...Read more

10m old baby boy. Development milestones met. Still does jerk few times a day for a month now and move head up down while playing. Worried if its seizure?

Query spasmus nutans: "Nodding spasms" is a rare condition that includes nystagmus, titubation, and torticollis (head tilt). Although common for infants to jerk once in a while, I consider a parental concern to be an important factor in the evaluation. The condition is benign and will self resolve. However, a complete evaluation by a pediatric neurology will put the matter to rest in order to rule out other conditions. ...Read more

My 14-week-old baby has become constipated and his poo has also turned light green. What can I do?

Constipation: There are different ways to treat constipation in an infant. Depends on if he is breastfed or formula fed. One can change to a more gentler formula that is easier on the tummy. You can also give some water with brown sugar, or prune juice small amount. There are also some laxatives and suppositories that can be used if more severe. Discuss with Ped or ask for virtual consult for more details. ...Read more
