10mg Valium Vs 5mg Xanax
Valium (diazepam) is an older benzodiazepine tranquilizer. It was the #1 prescribed drug (of any kind) in the us in the late 1960s but is used less now due to drug interactions and active metabolites. It is still used for anxiety and as "pre-medication" for uncomfortable medical and minor surgical procedures. It is habit-forming, should not be used with alcohol, ...Read more
Paradoxical reaction: Some people do experience agitation or arousal in response to benzodiazepines, including diazepam/valium & alprazolam/xanax. Sometimes this is because of partial sedation or loss of focus, which can be upsetting; this should improve with dose reduction. Sometimes it is due to impaired ability to read/respond to your surroundings, which can be frightening. ...Read more
Short vs long acting: Xanax (alprazolam) works for shorter periods, typically 4-6 hours, while valium works for 12-16 hours. Both are in the class of medications known as benzodiazepines, which work by increasing the effect of gaba, the generally inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. ...Read more
Xanax (alprazolam) has short effect: Your gp is probably about right in terms of the immediate effects of xanax (alprazolam) versus valium, but the two are quite different in terms of how long effects last. In my opinion, valium is a much safer medication than xanax (alprazolam), because it stays acts for much longer and gradually tapers. Withdrawal symptoms, on the other hand, can occur within three or four hour of having taken a dose of xanax (alprazolam). If on xanax (alprazolam) for a long time, it has to be tapered very slowly even if valium is being taken at the same time. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
There is NO way to: Be able to answer this question with the info provided. It depends on the condition being treated and the doctors prescribing preferences. How often do you see paradoxical reactions to Valium and xanax (alprazolam)? Is it often or infrequent
Not very common: A paradoxical reaction to a med is one that causes the opposite of usual expected effect. In a benzodiazepine it would be anxiety, insomnia, over-stimulation or agitation. If this occurs, one would suspect an unidentified underlying problem as associative cause (such as bipolar disorder, thyroid disease, drug abuse). In any case, discontinuation would be indicated & a search for other causes made. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Was on xanax (alprazolam) and Dr is switching me to valium for ic. Should I wait a day for xanax (alprazolam) to get out of system before taking valium?
Xanax (alprazolam) has a short: half-life meaning it will leave your system quickly but may cause withdrawal symptoms. Valium has a long half-life meaning it stays in your system longer and will likely counter any withdrawal symptoms from Xanax (alprazolam). It is wise to follow your doctor's directives. Best regards for relief. ...Read more
I took about 4 10 mg valiums and 1 2mg Xanax (alprazolam) bar together for 4 days, same dose of meds each day.I have a drug test in 16 days. Will i pass or fail?
Pass: If you are not a chronic user and this was a one time thing, most likely you will pass. If you are taking the valium daily, it can stay in your system for up to 30 days. It is dangerous to take these two drugs together if this is not a prescription and under close supervision of a doctor. They work in the same way and can exacerbate the sedative effects. Please enter treatment if addiction. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is it safe (non lethal) to have 2 drinks with 0.5mg Klonopin? I've done it several times. Is Valium safer than say Xanax (alprazolam) w/regards to having 2 drinks?
None are good: None of these are good to mix w/ alcohol. It may never kill you, but it's not safe and depending on other variations in your input (diet, illnesses, state of general health) it may suddenly be more risky. Talk frankly w/ your Dr and consider quitting drinking while you need the drug treatment. Talk therapy is am option and CBT helps anxiety mgmt best! ...Read more
New gp has cut my dose of 30mg Valium to 25- but is prescribing a friend 3mg of Xanax (alprazolam) with no problem- is this fair to pick & choose?
Your doctor is: Basing their decisions on the issues, symptoms and concerns that you have brought to him. Your friend is not you and has other issues that he is taking into account. Speak with your doctor if you are not sure the medication is the right one for you. It is not a matter of fairness, but clinical judgement, which is why he spent years in medical school and training. ...Read more
