Autistic 8 year old boy has brother (5 years) with speech impairment, their cousin (6 years) is hyperlexic. Do you recommend any genetic testing?
No: There are probably genetic factors in all of these, but these are polygenic. Hyperlexic kids often do very well in life. You won't find a single locus mutated that will inform a decision about preventing more children like this from being born. Genetic testing is for major, catastrophic illnesses like cystic fibrosis or muscular dystrophy -- single-gene diseases. ...Read more

Average weight: The 50% percentile for a girl that is 4 ft 11 inches is between 72.8 pounds and 81.4 pounds. It is possible you have a new disc issue in the disc space above or below the fused level. However, if the pain is exactly the same as before, you may be suffering from failing to fuse at the operated level. 6 months my not be long enough for fusion ...Read more

My 10 year old son just diagnosed with hand foot mouth disease. He is generally feeling fine. He still play sports with his father twice a day. Okay?
Sure, but...: Hand/foot/mouth is a viral illness usually caused by a virus called a coxsackie virus. Usually we see this in our part of the country in spring/early summer, but we too have seen some cases in our office the past few weeks. Your body will fight this off on its own, so if he's feeling ok, he can be as active as he feels ok for. He is fighting an illness, though, so insure plenty of rest and fluids. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
