If polyps are due to allergy, then agressive allergy treatment (avoidance, medication, allergy shots) is needed. Polyps in children are uncommon & can be associoated with cystic fibrosis or developmental masses. Evaluation by ENT is needed. ...Read more

What is most effective treatment for nasal polyps and maxillary sinusitis?

A good specialist: Nasal polyps and sinusitis can be treated but each treatment should be tailored to the individual. Some patients respond better than others. Generally the treatment will entail a combination of different medicines (antibiotics and/or steroids - oral or nasal). I would consult a good ENT or allergist. ...Read more

I'm on nasal spra treatment for nasal polyps. Is this something I will have to deal with the rest of my life or will they be fixed and that's the end?

Perhaps: It depends on the cause for the polyps. When problem is severe causing severe nasal obstruction, smell/taste impairment, and/or chronic sinus infection, surgery may be required. If the nasal polyps shrink from the nasal spray, consider stopping the spray after a year or so to see if the polyps would return. ...Read more

What are treatment options for nasal polyps?

What are treatment options for nasal polyps?

Medical or surgical: Depending on the size and the symptoms, medical treatment with both topical and oral steroids for a limited period of time can give enormous relief. Thyroid and allergy tests normal. Ct scan shows nasal polyps.Ent suggests operating but no other treatments explored. Need 2nd opinion or just do it?

Second opinion: There are several causes of nasal polyps including allergic fungal sinusitis, cystic fibrosis, and in patients with Aspirin "allergy" and asthma. It may help to see an allergist to attempt to identify these underlying conditions. Also, Prednisone is a strong steroid medication that may shrink nasal polyps without surgery. My opinion-always get second opinion before surgery. ...Read more

Besides surgery, what could be done for nasal polyps in a 16 year old girl? What could potentially cause this?

Depending on severit: If the polyps are very severe surgery may be the best option. Nasal steroid sprays may also be helpful if the polyps are not too severe. Oral steroids have been used temporarily some times successfully, but should be used only short term and only if other methods are not in order. The polyps come from the lining of the sinuses. The mucosa becomes thickened and hypertrophied. ...Read more
