What do I do for my 1 year olds runny nose?

What do I do for my 1 year olds runny nose?

Likely viral: Unfortunately there is not much to do for a runny nose other than let it run its course. You can try bulb suction if it is bothersome, saline rinses. If the child is otherwise acting normal not to worry. It may take a few days or a week for symptoms to resolve.

My 1 year old has runny nose, threw up but no fever. Should I go to doctors?

May be not: Your child likely is having a respiratory viral illness which resolve of its own in 3-4 days. If he is not running a fever, you don't need to do any thing except making sure he is well hydrated and comfortable.

I have a 1 year old with a runny nose how do I stop it?

I have a 1 year old with a runny nose how do I stop it?

Saline nose drops: Use saline nose drops in your child's nose and then suction the mucous with a bulb syringe to help with nasal congestion. Babies don't mind too much if their nose runs, but they get very fussy if they can't breathe through their noses! Use a cool mist humidifier. You should not give any over-the-counter cold medicine to a baby without a doctor's recommendation.

My one year old has a fever, runny nose, and a cough but she eats and play normally she just won't drink milk. What can this be?

Viral infection: Monitor her symptoms, they may resolve within a couple of days as they may be from a virus. Give her other fluids, water, rice milk or soy milk until she drinks the milk again, it may be too thick and bothers her throat.

You can: But remember that antihistamines dry the nasal tissues and can make them more prone to bleeding. A nasal saline or steroid spray would be a better option.

My one year old has been having congestion nd runny nose for about two months already. Is it normal?

It depends: If your child has congestion and runny nose, but is acting well (eating and sleeping well), it may be allergy related. In many parts of the country, spring and fall allergies can be really severe. Give him lots of fluids to keep the mucous loose, suction his nose with saline drops, and use a cool mist humidifier as needed. Call your doctor if he has a fever >101 for >2-3 days, or is acting sick.

My one year old daughter has had a temperature (axillary) of 100.8 5 days ago and today 101.5, slight runny nose and mild productive cough. Is this ok?

Evaluation: I would have her doctor take a listen to her lungs as she may have a bacterial infection or another reason for the fever. Viral infections can be precursors to bacterial infections and a concerning sign is a fever persisting or increasing after so many days.

Is it normal for my one year old to have cold symptoms for 2 weeks? Runny nose, decreased appetite, congested etc.?

Sometimes: Kids get on average 10 colds/year. Sometimes they may just have gotten over one cold and then another starts especially if they're in daycare. If your child is running a fever or you're ever concerned he/she has been sick for too long then you should take him/her to his/her doctor, if nothing more than for your peace of mind.

My one year old has watery eyes and runny nose, should I give him antihistamines?

My one year old has watery eyes and runny nose, should I give him antihistamines?

Seldom needed: Although used for decades these meds have not been shown to shorten an illness & may increase the thickness of secretions making it harder to cough them out. Many kids felt a little more would help them & self medicated & ended up in emergency rooms. The aap & other groups discourage their use under 6. I have mixed feelings. Saline nasal wash is preferable for younger kids.

Can an 18 lb. One-year old take pediacare (acetaminophen) with equate (antihistamine)? He has a fever and runny nose.

Yes: According to the weight-based guidelines. The Acetaminophen is for fever and pain, the antihistamine would be to dry up secretions. Always clear these medications with your pediatrician prior to starting.

My 1 year old has allergies but always has a runny nose regardless. Would this also be because of teething?

My 1 year old has allergies but always has a runny nose regardless. Would this also be because of teething?

Not from teething: Teething causes drooling, fussiness, gumming hard objects. Speak with your pediatrician about an appropriate dose of antihistamine to give your child. If the runny nose is inadequately controlled consult an allergist.

My 1 year old daghter has had a cough and runny nose with green mucus for 6 days I took her too the doctor she's. Still sick what should I do.

Take her back: Obviously whatever treatment they gave her did not work completely, call the doctor and let them know she is still sick. Also try using a saline nasal spray to help her congestion.

Wheezing: Some viruses in infants are associated with wheezing, particularly the RSV virus. If he is working hard to breath, has poor PO intake of high fever, he should be checked. The treatment is symptomatic and involves keeping his nasal passages clear, elevating his head and making sure his room is not too hot or dry. All the best.

My 1 year old has a runny tummy, runny nose, slight cough and low grade fever. Possible causes?

My 1 year old has a runny tummy, runny nose, slight cough and low grade fever. Possible causes?

Depends on how long: Most likely caused by a viral illness if symptoms have been there for less than 10-14 days. Keep your child hydrated by offering lots of fluids like water, pedialyte, diluted Gatorade. You can give acetaminophen for fever or discomfort. If symptoms longer than 10-14 days or fever longer than 5 days, see your doctor.

Baby with Fever: You immediately sign off of the internet and take this sick child to see her physician. Now. Any baby with a fever is to be evaluated urgently by their physician. You do not wait.
