1 Year Old Coughing
My son has a real. My one year old sons cough is so bad he keeps throwing up and coughing what can I do?
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
Vapor and love: There isn't really any medicine that's authorized for that age. Usually best thing is getting the bathroom steamy and sitting in there for half an hour or so. Helps the mucous drain. You can use Vicks (chest only, not on the feet), and nasal saline and suction to remove mucous from the nose. Other cold medicines are, unfortunately, off limits. ...Read more
There are many causes of cough, but one that lasts 3 weeks is considered prolonged. Usually cough caused by uncomplicated viral illnesses lasts 7-10 days. I would suggest an evaluation for wheezing, inflammation in the lung, a secondary infection, an ear/sinus/throat infection and other causes.
Your physician may order testing such as a chest radiograph to determine the cause and to advise rx ...Read more

? twitchy airways: Another fancy name for asthma-like symptoms, can be related to reflux, sinusitis, or viral infections, or other causes. You may want to perform some reflux precautions: raising the head of the bed 30 degrees, thicken her formula with cereal if she is still on it. More important is to see her doctor, as she might need some inhaled bronchodilators to help her at night and probably other Rx meds too, ...Read more

Your child needs further evaluation. Has she started going to day care recently? Cough for 1 month and rapid weight loss is a concern. Strep throat is rare at 1 yr, usual age is 5-15, exceptions are there though.
In evaluating her condition the things to keep in mind are: cystic fibrosis, immunodeficiency, asthma, metabolic diseases, GI (e.g. Celiac) or endocrine disorders. ...Read more

Honey: The feeling today is to avoid alot of the medications that in the past were used in infants. Honey can be used to soothe the throat in babies over 6 months. If there is bronchospasm then it might help to use a bronchodilator such as albuteral. If the baby is having more distress then a sh0rt course of oral steroids may be indicated. ...Read more

I have a one year old so who uses nebulizer but nw he sometimes cough w/ a harsh sound, will I use then the nebulizer?
Depends: On the reason for the cough. Generally a "barking" or harsh cough is not indicative of bronchospasm but more suggestive of croup, swelling of the upper airway. When I hear that a child with asthma tends to also have a harsh cough, my first thought is that there may be some silent reflux sensitizing the upper airway. Ask his primary care physician to consider that. ...Read more

7-10 Days: Many one year olds with cough with a cold for a week or so. If the coughs is severe (disrupting sleep, associated with fever >102, or limiting activity) I would go to the pediatrician. Aspiration, reflux: Many things can cause long-term cough and congestion in a one-year old, most relate to inhaling (aspirating) what they eat.
