Get tested: If you have a sore, that's the best way to test. Doctor can do a viral culture which is very specific and accurate. Otherwise blood tests can be done to assess ever-exposure. Good luck and i hope it's negative!

How can I know for sure if I have genital herpes?

Get tested: The best test is a swab of the actual ulcer while it is present. This can be hard to do because you may not be able to get into the doctor during the 5-10 day period where the ulcer is shedding active virus that can be detected. The next best way is to get a blood test looking for hsv2 igg. This will detect an antibody against genital herpes indicating past exposure.

A 37-year-old member asked:
I have genital herpes. What are the chances of me passing it to bf during oral?

Unclear: Are you concerned with passing it to your boyfriend when performing oral sex on him, or him getting oral herpes by performing oral sex on you? If it is the latter, the chances are good, assuming he does not already carry the virus. Many individuals have acquired the virus previously but do not display active lesions.

What should I do if I have genital herpes confirmed? Tell her?

Yes: It is your responsibility to let your partner know that she is at risk of developing herpes. I recommend that partners of carriers be tested for HSV antibodies, since many people are carriers and don't know it. If she is not a carrier, then you can take daily Acyclovir or valacyclovir and minimize the risk of transmission by 80% (tho not 100%).
