A 28-year-old member asked:

My child has a stomach ache with his chickenpox, can I give them pepto-bismol?

2 doctor answers5 doctors weighed in
Dr. James Ferguson
Pediatrics 46 years experience
Not recommended: Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) has a component salycelate that was linled with a devistating disease called reye's syndrome in the 70's & 80's. After physicians stopped recomending salycelate products there was a rapid decline in the frequency of that problem. Discuss your concern with your physician for the best possible comfort meds.

Even the chewable calcium carbonate Kids' Pepto worries me because it's pink, & it's bismuth subsalicylate that causes that color.

A 24-year-old member asked:

I fractured my elbow. I have a cast, but now my hand is swelling. Is my hand fractured too?

Dr. Jack Choueka
Specializes in Orthopedic Surgery
Probably not: If there was no injury to the hand and it is not painful then it is probably not fractured. Swelling in the hand after an elbow injury especially in a cast is common. The swelling must be controlled with ice, elevation and most importantly keeping the fingers moving. If it becomes severe it can lead to permanent stiffness of the fingers. A good therapist can help controll the swelling.

No: These are serious symptoms and warrant immediate medical attention. Please seek urgent help from your doctor or the emergency room.
Dr. Randall Bock

(you might want to consider whether it is safe for the airline or your seat-mate on the airplane for you to be flying ;-) ); that being said, most likely your problem is not life-threatening, but more information needed, and consulting your doctor would not be the worst thing. Somebody who knows your situation.
