Periods: It is normal to have a period every 21-35 days which as you can see is not exactly the same as having it once per month. Use your past history to determine if you have a regular predictable pattern or if you have irregular periods. If you are irregular then consider seeing an Obgyn for options for regulating.

You count: the predictable one based on your menstrual history as your real period. The other period is not your real period. It is abnormal bleeding of the uterus because of hormonal imbalance or an infection of the cervix or abnormal cells on the cervix.
Dr. Hunter Handsfield
Infectious Disease 53 years experience
Be safe, see doctor: Two apparent periods in a month usually means abnormal bleeding between periods. Any abnormal or unexpected vaginal bleeding should be professionally evaluated. Usually it turns out not to be serious -- sometimes hormonal, minor infection, or unknown. STDs like gonorrhea or chlamydia are possible if at risk (new partner, partner with other partners, etc). Best play it safe and see your doctor.

Bloating: Bloating prior to or during your period is due to fluid retention & slower digestion (constipation). To decrease bloating avoid salt intake (including prepackaged foods), increase water intake (to flush the body & reduce constipation), consider magnesium or calcium supplements (with your dr’s approval) or otc meds that include a diuretic such as midol. Exercise and birth control pills may help.

Common complaint: Irregular periods are one of the most common problems obgyns treat. If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections & hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do a home pregnancy test .
