Home pregnancy tests: When used properly, modern pregnancy tests are very accurate and can detect pregnancy as early as the first day after a missed period. Anovulatory cycles, stress, weight loss, medication, exercise, and other benign things can cause menstrual irregularity. plan B can be used within 72 hours of an unprotected encounter to prevent pregnancy.

Once menses are late: But why wait? If you had unprotected sex last night and are not interested in becoming pregnant, you still have time for emergency contraception, available w/o prescription. Just follow instructions ASAP. If you do want to become pregnant, just wait. Pregnancy tests are also available w/o prescription and very accurate once your menses are late. If trying to conceive, start prenatal vitamins now.

9 days: A blood pregnancy test could be positive as soon as 9 days from now, a urine test possibly two days after that. However it may be as long as 15 to 17 days before you can trust a negative test.
