Painful : Painful soft bumps around the anus sound to me like hemorrhoids. That said, it's not possible to rule out something more sinister without an examination, and the fact that there is a history of colon and other cancers in your family makes it all the more important that you be checked out. You haven't indicated your age, but if you're over 50, it's time to be checked for colon cancer anyway. My suggestion is that you try an over-the counter agent like preparation h or tucks (witch hazel) pads for a couple of weeks. If that gets rid of your problem, then they're probably hemorrhoids. However, if they don't get better with that, or you've already tried this approach without success or you're over 50, you should see a doctor.

It is important that you get checked. Remember what happened to Farah Fawcett! This cancer can have a high cure rate if found early.

Could be hemorrhoids: Or condyloma which are venereal warts. These can lead to anal cancer if not diagnosed and treated. See your doctor or a colorectal surgeon for a thorough exam.
