Preimplantation test: With in vitro fertilization and preimplantation genetic diagnosis nowadays it is possible to determine whether the fertilized egg has any major/specific genetic abnormalities prior to transferring it into the maternal womb. Seek genetic counseling and rei care for ivf/pgd options in your case.
Dr. James Ferguson
Pediatrics 46 years experience
Unrealistic: Pregnancy has basic risks with as many as 4% resulting in some issue, birth defects to prematurity or infection. All of us carry recessive genes that would only be a problem if the spouse carried the same defect. Some issues could be studied in a fertilized egg before implantation, but you would have to specify which of thousands of defects to study. No guarantee would assure that nothing got thru

Yes: Many medications, including many antibiotics and estrogen containing birth control pills, are metabolized in the liver. The end result can be that the liver increases its metabolism of the birth control pills, thereby decreasing their effectiveness. For this reason, many doctors recommend that you use an alternate method of birth control such as condoms while taking any antibiotics.
