How do you know?: You can only get an infection from sex with a partner who is infected, whether with syphilis, gonorrhea, hiv, or others. But it's generally hard to know whether someone is infected. Your partners may not always know, and people have been known to lie for the purpose of sex. The best approach is to assume everyone's infected and behave accordingly.
