Please read this: Weight gain is certainly a concern to many women. However, they need to ask about other, more serious side effects of any medication. Here is a noncommercial source of information about Brevicon (ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone) with some warnings about potentially life-threatening complications from blood clot formation: http://www.Nlm.Nih.Gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a601050.Html.

No smoking: Oral contraceptives can be associated with blood clots in the lungs (dvts) or lungs (pulmonary embolisms) and one of the bigger risk factors is smoking, especially over the age of 35. I am not aware of studies that show Aspirin (asa) decreases the risk of blood clots while on oral contraceptives.

A member asked:

I'm on yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol). I missed my period the last 2 months. I've had black discharge. I took 2 home pregnancy test & both were negative. What should I do?

Be patient.: It sounds like the Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) is shortening your period so much that you aren't getting a full period. Then your bleeding becomes irregular and can cause spotting (or the black discharge you are experiencing). Old blood is usual very dark brown or black. If this continues then see your doctor, but i would give it one more month and it will probably go away. Good job taking the pregnancy test! :-).

Depends: You probably still have some of the hormone left in your system, you would have had to ovulate at that time, you can check a blood preg test if u don't get your period on time, but it is not smart esp at your age to have unprotected sex, as u could get pg or get an std which could cause a bad infection and in some cases infertilty.

Watch closely: From your description you are just due for your period, which would explain the bleeding. If this does not progress into your period and your symptoms do not improve, or if the symptoms worsen, you should be checked.
