Yes it's safe: Unless the sore is on the skin area that directly touches the skin of your boyfriend when you cuddle and hold hands, then it's absolutely safe hold hands.

Yes.: Herpes generally requires skin-to-skin or mucous membrane-to-mucous membrane contact for transfer from one person to another. You are wise to avoid kissing and oral sex when you have an active sore. You probably have Herpes Type 1 (oral herpes) but, like Herpes Type II (genital herpes), it can be spread to the genital area.
