A 31-year-old female asked:

Itching at the opening of the vagina almost 1 month. pelvic exam normal pap test and swab test normal no discharge no odor just itching.any ideas??

More info needed: Itching can be associated with soaps or bubble bath or tissue. Additionally, laundry detergent may irritate these areas by remaining on clothes. Often times soaking in tub of plain water with 5 capsful of white vinegar may be helpful. After soaking for 5 minutes, rinse off with plain water and pat dry. Could potentially be: herpes, though I am not sure you are at risk for this. You can see your doctor to have the test performed since you are having symptoms (often itching/burning can occur). Other causes could include allergic irritation from any products you use around your vagina (maxi-pad, detergent from panties, etc). Hope this helps.

I agree with Dr. Colgrove. Another possibility, as I was reminded By Dr. A. Rogers on a similar post, is pediculosis pubis (crabs!). Also avoid scented soaps, creams. Avoid fabric softeners altogether. If you are not wearing cotton lined underwear, & wear spandex or other fibers, could be due to that as well. I am seeing that generic panty-liners, pads, are causing much much more of this.
