Usually location: Herpes simplex virus type 1 usually causes cold sores on the lips. Type 2 usually causes genital herpes. However, herpes virus is an equal opportunity virus, so type 1 sometimes causes genital herpes, and type 2 sometimes ends up causing lip sores, depending on what kinds of activities a person participates in. There is no cure, but anti-viral medications help treat and prevent recurrences.

Herpes: Hsv 1 is usually the cause of fever blisters and hsv 2 is usually the cause of genital herpes, but both can cross the waist line.

Depends: Dangerous can mean different things to different people. It can be dangerous because it causes genital lesions which are hazardous to your sex life. It can also rarely cause meningoencephalitis (brain and surrounding tissue infection) which is far more life threatening. However, the most common presentation of hsv-2 is genital herpes, which is not life threatening.

How Severe?: Most cases of herpes simplex i will resolve within a few days without treatment. Routine use of a broad spectrum sunscreen will help prevent and reduce the frequency of episodes. If the blisters are numerous with discomfort, an oral antiviral drug may be prescribed (valacyclovir, acyclovir, famciclovir).

The virus: is shed from active lesions, and may also be shed to a lesser extent from the same locations during quiescent periods. Usually HSV1 occurs on the lips. Nasal mucus should not contain the virus.
