i have a pain in my left side rib area it it come and goes and it hurts when i breath deep what could it be ?

Several: Any trauma or falls? Unusual increased activity? Bailing hay etc! clotting or bleeding issues? Most likely musculoskeletal but pleurisy from pneumonia or pe can mimic. Local heat, tylenol-- if not better quickly be examined and get x-ray.

Costochondritis?: What you describe sounds like an irritation of the place where the end of the rib connects to cartilage. Different things can cause that, but one of the main risk factors is smoking. It's a problem that goes away by itself but it takes a while. It's reasonable to use Motrin when it gets bad.

Needs evaluation: 1. Could be rib, soft tissue injury 2. Could be a collapsed lung 3. Could be a blood clot ultimately you need evaluation and if your pain is that bad you need to go to the emergency room.
