A 48-year-old member asked:
what will a doctor do after a ruptured ovarian cyst?
1 doctor answer • 1 doctor weighed in

Dr. Thomas Carzoli answered
Obstetrics and Gynecology 47 years experience
Very little: Every month in a normal cycle, an ovarian cyst is formed and subsequently ruptures. If the cyst contains blood, it may cause some discomfort and pain medication may be given.

Not really: There is no connection between a ruptured cyst and amount of menstrual blood. Cysts on there own can potentially effect hormone levels and cycle length /timing.

Depends: It depends on the size of the cyst that ruptured. Obviously, larger cyst will contain more fluid and will take longer to be reabsorbed.

Severe pain: You may have to be hospitalized if you are in severe pain or if there is bleeding associated with ruptured cyst and need surgical intervention. You may also need to be hospitalized if the diagnosis is uncertain and there are other serious conditions that cannot be ruled out.
