Concern for clot: One sided lower leg swelling and pain is concerning for a clot in the veins of the leg, called a deep vein thrombosis (dvt). This should be evaluated with ultrasound.

Shin splints: Or tendonopathy are strong possibilities. Ice may help as well as antiinflammatory, if pain psists would follow up with doc.

You must also consider the possibility of a stress reaction or fracture. Xrays and/or MRI is recommended.
