Only if .......: You have a really low bmi. Usually you need at least 17% body fat. The ovaries need to be able to secrete estrogen. The estrogen eventually stimulates growth of the endometrium (uterine lining) which is eventually shed.

Wt. gain/menarche: Yes, there is a critical body mass index(BMI) and estrogen level that will induce a first period (menarche) in a young girl. However, gaining fat at ages 9 through 11 is not recommended to accomplish that event. Menarche is occurring earlier in America then a generation ago due to better nutrition and ages for the same have dropped from 11-12 to 10-11 years of age.
