why did my lactation consultant say my baby should not have powder formula until he is 9 -10 months old, only to give ready to use formula until then?

No idea: Powder formula supplementation that is properly mixed is just as good as ready mixed in my book.

Is it safe to use sleep aids or herbs to help my baby sleep better?

No: Never give your baby anything to try and help them sleep. This is extremely dangerous. Just because something is labeled an herb, or sold in a health food store does not mean that it is safe. It is never advisable under any circumstances to give an infant a sleep aide whether it be by prescription or over the counter.

A 38-year-old member asked:

Should I be concerned that my baby has an ear infection?

2 doctor answers3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Cornelia Franz
Specializes in Pediatrics
No: Ear infections are common and many children have one or two in the first two years. If they are becoming recurrent, than I am concerned and want more information. Often diet can be a factor, or starting daycare, or if you moved to a new location. Garlic and willow drops (or garlic and mullein or garlic and goldenseal) in the ear as drops can help alleviate pain.

How can I handle mild food allergies in my infant?

Dr. Douglas Tzanetos

Avoidance: For food allergies, avoidance is the best option. However, if the food is a nutritionally important food such as milk or wheat, it may be best to be tested to make sure. An allergist can help decide if you child has a food allergy, give tips on avoidance, prescribe an epi pen for severe allergies, and decide when to test if the food allergy is decreasing since some are outgrown.

My baby cries whenever I put her to sleep on her tummy, they say I have to do that 4 her lungs to be strong?

Who told you that ?: The american academy of pediatrics & many other advisory groups have promoted sleeping on a babies back since the early 90's. Since that time we have seen a 40-50% drop in crib death over that period. I know of no one that advises belly sleeping for any reason, although if baby rolls into that position after 6m i don't try to change it. Tummy time while awake can help build upper body strength.

A 24-year-old female asked:

I had gestational diabetes while I was and had to take insulin. Now my baby is 6weeks old and the diabetes is gone. I'm just wondering if there is higher riskfor my baby to be diabetic later on in life?

Not directly: The diabetes of pregnancy is closest to the Insulin resistant or type 2 diabetes which is something all of us can get under some circumstances. You are at risk for a return of type 2 later & things like an active lifestyle & maintaining a healthy weight tend to reduce your risk. I wouldn't be concerned about childhood diabetes which is a very different process.
