A 35-year-old member asked:
how does astigmatism affect human eye ?

Blurs vision: Images are blurred with astigmatism. You can think of astigmatism as a football on the surface of your eye. You need the equivalent of a round basketball to see clearly. Patients with astigmatism wear contacts or glasses shaped as a football in the opposite axis, thus neutralizing the astigmatism.

Blurred vision: Astigmatism is generally corrected with glasses and contact lenses. Otherwise is will simply cause vision to not be as clear as normal.

A 43-year-old member asked:
Are there eye conditions that are similar to astigmatism?

Dr. William Goldstein answered

Not really: Astigmatism is curvature of the eye that causes 2 images in the eye. It is unique, but is part of problems in the eye known as refractive error. Near and farsightedness are 2 others. All are correctable with glasses, contact lenses and surgery. More info: http://www.2020vision.Com/refractive_error.Html.

Yes: If there is any difference/imbalance from one eye to another including astigmatism, this can cause eye strain or even headaches. Correcting the imbalance should relieve the symtoms.

A 22-year-old male asked:
I wear contacts for seeing far and have astigmatism in one eye, when i don't wear contacts and look at a pencil i see multiple reflections around it?

Dr. James Goodpaster answered

You answered it!: Astigmatism is the reason that you see the multiple reflections. Astigmatism causes multiple focal points and thus you see the "reflections" or multiple views when you do not have your contacts in.
