A 32-year-old member asked:

Is a pap smear the same thing as a biopsy?

No, there is a diffe: They are two different procedures. Pap smear is a simple swabbing of the surface of the cervix whereas a biopsy involved cutting a piece of cervix/tumor and is a more involved procedure which also carries some risk of bleeding(not a problem with the pap smear).

Similar: A pap smear uses the loose cells taken from the surface of a tissue for the purpose of screening , to detect the presence of an abnormality that might warrant a biopsy for the definitive diagnosis.

No: The pap looks for abdnormal cervical cells, and the endometrial biopsy looks for abnormal endometrial cells (from inside the uterus). Both tests require a vaginal exam.
