Maybe?: The type of immobilization depends on where the thumb is broken and how bad the break is. You cannot tell if it is broken by looking at it, you need an x-ray. If you injured your thumb, get it checked out.

Level of fracture: Often times fractures of the base of metacarpal or intra articular fracture may require surgery for stabilization. So sometimes thumb fractures require even more than just casting. You need an x-ray for evaluation.
