Disc replacement : Currently disc replacement involves going through the front of spine (neck or abdomen). The diseased disc is removed and a replacement disc is placed. Current disc prosthetics in the us are made of all metal, or a hybrid of plastic and metal.
Dr. Justin Esterberg
Orthopedic Spine Surgery 24 years experience
Disc: Depending on whether or not the patient is a candidate for surgery to replace the disc, there are two primary options selected. One is a fusion where the disc is replaced with a cage and bone graft. The other option is an artificial disc replacement where the disc is removed and replaced with a mobile prosthesis that allows for motion at that segment in the spine.

How much fluid is actually in a lumbar disc?

Dr. Michael Bolesta
Orthopedic Surgery 40 years experience
70-90%: The normal young adult disk is about 70-90% water, but it is held in the cells and other parts of the disk. Some of the molecules act like sponges to suck in and hold onto the water molecules. As we stand and sit and work throughout the day, some gets squeezed out; when we lie down and rest, those molecules suck it back in. As the disk ages, the percentage will decrease.
