For a short time: If a woman is bleeding very heavily, and comes to the hospital, one of the possible treatments is high dose estrogen by iv, which will work for a short time. However one of the common ways i treat a woman with heavy prolonged bleeding who i see in the office is birth control pills, which contain estrogen. Sometimes i need to give her 2 or 3 a day for several days to stop the bleeding.

Sometimes: In certain situations, estrogen pills can be prescribed to stop menstrual bleeding. For example, they are sometimes used if you are having prolonged, heavy bleeding that needs to stop.
