It can: most commonly causes diarrhea, but constipation is also possible. This is usually when alcohol is consumed to excess, not average social drinking of 1-2 drinks per day or less. If you are drinking at an unsafe level, you need to cut down. If you have problems cutting down, or if your drinking has reached abuse/dependency levels, you need to get help in stopping with a chemical dependency program.

All people are diff.: All people are different. Some of it depends on how badly one is habituated to alcohol. Avoid getting into that situation by stopping or at least controlling your intake so you don't have to worry about detoxifying.

That is very tough: But it may be that u need to help yourself. Al anon and those groups will show u how to not go down with a sinking ship while he seeks help. There are a few options that may help him. The opiod receptor blocker Naltrexone takes the satisfaction away. Topirimate seems to help reduce problem drinking, but he likely needs in patient detox, treatment for mood/stress issues, support group. Gd luc.
