Not really: Cod liver oil contains very high amounts of vitamin a. It is dangerous to take it as vitamin a is toxic to the liver and is well-known cause of birth defects. Although the retina needs vitamin a, you can more safely get it through eating red and orange vegetables. These contain the vitamin a precursor beta-carotene which is not toxic.
