A 27-year-old member asked:

Does my hand shaking have anything to do with my nervous system?

Probably: Shaking of hands is pretty much the result of the activity of muscles. There could possibly be a muscular imbalance, but most likely it is the activity of the nerves that supply those muscles that is responsible for the shaking. The shaking might be seen to disappear when you deeply relax. If so, it probably partly due to stress and anxiety. See an appropriate health professional soon.

A 59-year-old male asked:

Md #: what test would you most likely use that would identify Parkinson's in a persons hand when the shaking is intermittent (not constant)? Thank-you

Alcohol: There is no test for parkinson's - the diagnosis is made based on symptoms and examination. In addition to tremor, stiffness, low rate of blinking are some other findings. In younger people with tremor the most common cause is benign essential or familiar tremor. It usually stops with alcohol, but instead of taking up drinking, ask your md for a prescription for a beta blocker, such as inderal (propranolol).

Well, it: Sounds like u have an occasional tremor, maybe caffeine or one of a million things. Don't let the anxiety run with this one, it probably self limited and not a sign of disease, good luck.

Hard to say?: Constant shaking of the hands or arms even at rest needs to be checked out. This is often due to a neurologic disorder. These can be mild, like a benign essential tremor, or more serious like parkinson's disease. See your doctor to get it checked out.
