A 64-year-old female asked:

is a low no carb diet an effective management tool for lowering cholesterol levels?

No: I don't find it so. It may be ok to lower your triglycerides somewhat but not cholesterol in general. Even people who experienced weight loss are often surprised to see minimal if any change in their cholesterol. I find that cholesterol is genetically determined in most cases and if it is higher than normal in your case, besides diet and exercise, you will need to be on a cholesterol lowering med.

A 38-year-old member asked:

What diet will prevent the progression of heart disease?

Dr. Joseph Roosth

Somewhat: Diet with modification of fat intake, coupled with exercise can help slow heart disease progression. To say it can prevent it is probably stretching things. However, there is no question that regular exercise coupled with good diet habits and a physician's guidance imo can clearly improve one's cardiac disease status. I believe considerable research exists to back up that statement.
