I have a sinus infection and every day i feel even worse than the last. What else can I take?

Yes: A sinus infeciton can turn into a fungal infection, which can be very difficult to treat. In certain cases, due to the severity of a fungal infection, some individuals have had to have major resections of their jaw in order to erradicate the fungal infection. So, i don't recommend you putting off dealing with a sinus infection. If you have one, get seen by a sinus specialist asap. Keep smiling.

Low odds: The odds of a local, orbital or intracranial complication from sinus disease is low in this day and age but we still do see a few cases a year. The orbit is the structure most commonly involved by spread of sinus infection. Intracranial complications occur about 4% of patients hospitalized with sinusitis.

Maximize OTC meds: Often even in cases where antibiotics are necessary, we can alleviate the annoying symptoms of sinusitis with otc meds. A very useful regimen is using a salt water rinse 2 a day (ex neilmed sinus rinse). Also Mucinex (guaifenesin) max strength 2x day will also help most of the time. Another adjunct is to use a anti-histamine medication as well. However, good these are, often you will need antibiotics.

Meds: If symptoms have been less than a week.. It may just be a cold... Wait it out and treat symptoms. If symptoms longer than a week with facial pain/pressure/ nasal drainage/sore throat... May be a sinus infection... Best to get some antibiotics.

Symptoms?: Sinusitis can cause many symptoms. The medications including the over the ones address specific symptoms. If this is viral in nature, get rest and stay well hydrated. Over the counter nasal saline spray can help to clear some the secretions. If your not feeling better after a few days, see your doctor.

Observe: Most sinus infections do not require antibiotics. Sinusitis is an overtreated condition. Many uri's & colds are mis-diagnosed as a sinus infection. Sinus pressure & pain may not be an actual sinus infection. Give it 5-7 days: Most upper respiratory infections (uri's/common cold) are viral & cause congestion, facial pressure, purulent drainage, & fever. They last ~5-7 days. Treat conservatively with otc products, sinus rinses (and good hand washing). Usually symptoms start to improve in 5-7 days. Antibiotics are *usually* not needed before then. If symptoms are severe or worsen after 7d, see your md or ent.
