Many?: Since we do not know what causes canker sores, the remedies are many. One approach is to apply a topical broad-spectrum antibiotic a few times a day. Another home remedy is to apply table salt on the sore itself but do realize this may hurt a bit. I am sure there are many other remedies but none has been scientifically proven.

Licorice: Licorice has been used since ancient times for canker sores (also known as apthous ulcers) in the mouth. Also, small studies show it can be effective when used as a mouthwash -- 50-75% improvement in 1 day. http://tinyurl.com/kr9aeau sucking on dgl lozenges may work also. Other studies showed positive results with a dissolving licorice disk placed on the sore. http://tinyurl.com/mdvde3o.

Mainly time: The main thing is just time there are some medications that can decrease pain (i.e., viscous lidocaine) and increase speed of recovery (i.e., steroids). Also, cauterizing the sore can speed healing and decrease pain. Most toothpastes have a detergent called sls (sodium laureth sulfate) that may cause these sores. Get a toothpaste that doesnt have sls, i.e., biotine cancer sore relief.

A few choices: There are several over the counter medications developed to control canker sores. For those who prefer not to medicate you may try hene laser. The spot should be on the lesion for 30 seconds and cover the adjacent tissue. For more info: http://www.Webmd.Com/oral-health/guide/canker-sores.
