None: Prediabetes usually exists for a long period of time before it presents with the usual symprtoms that we identify with diabetes. However, these people are usually overweight, underexercised, have lipid abnormalities in the blood and have blood sugars that are between the absolute normal and high exough to make a diagnosis of diabetes.

None.: Prediabetes typically has no associated symptoms. This is why blood testing is so important, especially in those with a family history of diabetes or in those who are overweight.

Warning sign: Prediabetes is a warning sign that you may be at risk for developing diabetes. You have some features that may lead to diabetes but you do not yet fit the definition for diagnosis. Two of the criteria for diabetes are two fasting blood sugars of 126 or higher and a random non-fasting sugar of 200 or higher. Prediabetes is a fasting sugar of 100-125 or random of 140-199. There are others too.

Yes: The diabetes prevention program (dpp- please look at their website for information) has shown that through proper diet and exercise (5-7% weight loss, 30 min of moderate activity 5 days per week) can prevent progression from pre-diabetes to diabetes. I have seen many patients able to bring their blood sugar from prediabetic range back to normal with proper diet/exercise routine.

Dr. Shaym Puppala
Internal Medicine 25 years experience
Not likely.: "pre-diabetes" is used to describe a condition where the blood glucose (bg) is high, but not high enough to be as damaging as uncontrolled diabetes can be.Fasting bg between 100 - 125 is "pre-diabetic"(impaired fasting glucose), as is a bg between 140 - 199 after 75g of glucose by mouth (impaired glucose tolerance). While there are increased risks even of "pre-diabetes, " cramps not likely due to it.

Not much: Unlike type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetics might not have any physical signs/symptoms. It's important to get your lab tested if you think you have prediabetes. Some of the signs/symptoms of hyperglycemia are: unusual thirst, frequent urination, blurry vision, fatigue or feeling more tired than normal for unknown reasons, unusual weight loss, hunger, frequent infections, cuts/bruises that won't heal...
